Audi door handle surface cleaner, sticky

All,

I have a 1999.5 Audi A4 and have an issue, the door handles have become gummy/sticky in feel. I have been unable to get them to not have a sticky texture. Any ideas on what I can use to clean them and get rid of this sticky feeling?

I have tried plain water, interior cleaners and even degreasers but the surface still feels tacky. Could this be a result of not having a UV protectant on them all these years when the car was stored outside?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Yes, they are those rubber coated 'soft touch' plastic door handles/wonder button surrounds like they use on all Audi and VW cars.

It sort of sounds like maybe a degreaser or something was used on them that is causing it. Sort of sounds like how steering wheels get when someone uses a simple green type product on them. Like the rubber just gets soft and sticky.

I've had a few vinyl surfaces get like that in the A8, and yeah, it does seem related to wear/neglect/etc. I used a multi-step cleaning process with both Sonus cleaner and Griot's Interior Cleaner and that seemed to work OK; eventually the sticky material was all gone. I dressed them with Meg's Interior QD (gotta try something more heavy duty some time...) and they've stayed OK so far.

Some of these areas, the ones that're getting a lot of wear, are starting to show uncolored, underlying vinyl...yuck...wonder how bad *that* is gonna get over time :o You might want to be a little gentle lest you get your pieces to that point prematurely.

I have used isopropyl alcohol in the past and it has been very effective.

Sticky feeling you say? Use some detergent or some cleanser for it. :buffing:
