ATD detailed - 96 Mazda Miata

A guy from a local car group asked me about correcting the paint on his miata. I looked over the car and gave a price quote. Fast forward a few weeks. Car is dropped off on Friday evening for a full detail - engine, interior, and paint correction. Interior and engine went off without a hitch. I wash and clay the car and assess the paint. While measuring the paint I discover that what I thought was single stage paint (and should have been from the factory) was mostly clear coated. After working with a test section to determine the appropriate pad/polish combo I find out that the clear coat was rock hard. I had to use an Uber yellow 4" pad on my PC with 3 full passes of about a min or two each with about 15-20lbs of pressure to get any sort of correction. The single stage paint was much softer, so a different combo was used for each type of paint.

The Process:

Interior

Remove seats

vacuum

steam clean with Meg's APC+

scrub seats with Woolite/water solution

Clean dash with Woolite/water solution

scrape off tape residue with razor blade

treat dash and seats with 303 Aerospace Protectant

Engine

Spray down engine with water

Spray with Meg's APC+ and agitate with brush

Dress with Meg's Hyper Dressing

Paint

Wash with two bucket method

Clay with Clay Magic Clay Bar and ONR lube

M105 with Uber yellow 4" pad for resprayed clear coat

SIP with Uber green 4" pad for resprayed CC

Micro Polish PO87MC with Uber blue 5.5" pad for resprayed CC

SIP with Uber orange 4" pad for CC hardtop and OEM single stage

Micro Polish PO87MC with Uber green 5.5" pad for hardtop and OEM single stage

OEM touch up paint applied

LSP

Zaino Z-CS

Zaino Z-8 Grand Finale Spray

Z-16 Tire Gloss

Nice job, I hate pollen season. I can't even detail outside for 5min. without having a nice yellow blanket on everything. You did a great job on those seats, taking the extra effort really shows. Looks like a bad rust spot forming that that left quarter panel though :nervous2:

Thanks! There are a few bad rust spots showing themselves. According to the owner, they are on the slate for things to fix on this car.

Nice work. I can't believe a "car guy" would have this car looking this bad. That thing was rough.

The owner purchased this car about 10 months ago. Now that school is coming to a close and weather is nice, he wanted the car done up right. This detail was getting rid of the remnants of the previous owners :bat

Turned out really good, especially for having to deal with differing paint quality. :)

Thanks! That was definitely the hardest part of the whole detail. There was actually 3 different types of paint on it: factory clear coat on the hard top and spoiler, body shop clear coat, and then single stage.

Great job Subygirl! I have nearly the same car detailed last week (except the one I did was a 96 M Edition in Starlight Mica Blue). Mine was all clearcoat but 105/205 did the trick. Excellent attention to detail as previously stated!

Very nice attention to detail. Pulling seats and removing antenna's is pretty impressive. Very nice work.

Thanks!

Thanks! I think I saw that write up the other day too. Didn't you mention that it had a thin paint coat? My hubby has a 99 miata that is clear coated and the total thickness is between 88-106um, mostly in the 88-96 range (about 3.5mils).

That wasn't my write up. I am still sifting through 135 pictures. This had pretty thick paint though and had never been polished or compounded before.
