Hey i have a friend that just bought a 99 Monte from arizona and it feeled gritty so i tried claying it but it didnt do anything. it still feels like its sandpaper. im guessing its just the way cars get from arizona but what can i do with this? will a goodrubbing compound work or what?

I lived in Arizona for 15 years and cannot recall the paint finishes feeling any rougher than they do here in SC. Only thing that stands out in my mind were the dust storms that battered the paint with small stones.

Is it possible the car was repainted and debris was trapped? Dust, sand particles, etc.

May want to try a more aggressive clay bar.

You may want to try a chemical paint cleaner like Megs Color-X or Klasse AIO. You should also examine the paint very closley to see what is causing that gritty feeling. Is it paint defects like pitting or etching, or is it caused by a bad repaint that was never sanded, buffed, or applied correctly? You really need to identify the cause of that feel before you decide how to attack it. I wouldn't say that it is common with all cars from AZ unless the paint was neglected and not waxed. Also don't discount the possibility of a bad repaint, you should be able to tell by looking at the doorjambs, around the trunk/hood area, etc.

If you decide to go the rubbing compound route you may want to try megs #83 followed by #80, or 3M PI III RC (rubbing compound) followed by 3M PI III MG (machine glaze).

ok. i guess from what i hear that it was a rental:nixweiss so ill have to check the paint next time i see it. I only said it must be common because another friend got a car from down in that area and it was the same way. so maybe it was poorly taken car of i guess.

Thanks for the help and ill get back to you on what i see.

I don't see this problem very often with AZ cars. I have worked on many neglected finishes that felt a little rough, but nothing that a clay would not take care of. The two problems we encounter the most are the hot sun, which oxidizes the paint, and our water is alkyline which tends to water spot easily.
