Apply, Rub... then Wipe?

Just a quick question on the really basic stuff. When I have been detailing my own (and friends) cars, I have found that I have been applying the polish, paint cleaner, wax et cetera and then rubbing it in until I cant see it anymore. Yet time and time again I remember that the bottle actually says to apply, rub it in, then wipe it off.

Doesnt this leave a sort of residue on the paint if you just 'wipe it off', or would you suggest that i'd be doing the right thing?

You've got it right, you're working your product into the paint. It's meant to do that, you get the best results that way. As for the residues, if there is a residue left yo should wait a little while and then wipe with a clean towel, that should take care of any product that may want to hang around on the surface.
