Anyone wax or seal their phones?

Yeah I said phones lol.

I'm sure other autopians have thought of this trying to stop their ipods, sansa's, blackberries, iphones, and droids from getting scratches. Anyone ever wax their screen (for protection) or screen protectors (for more protection, better feel, less fingerprints)?

I just ordered an iphone 4 and going to use a sgp full body kit, and some sort of hard case for the back and sides. That's enough protection and piece of mind for me for my new phone. I do have a cheap brand new sansa fuze I just threw 5 coats of supernatural on just to experiment. They are cheap so I don't care and I'm sick of screen protectors, crappy cases, and skins when devices look so nice on their own.

Yeah I'm not going to touch my iphone with anything accepts for shields and cases. Iphone's glass on both sides, I'd imagine it'd go flying out of your hands if you hit it with detailing product on both sides. I did pick up an otterbox defender for the gym and traveling. I may give waxing the hard screen cover part of the case a try if I don't like the feel of it. I can always just strip it off if it doesn't work because it's only on the case.

Did you do put anything on the back of the iphone under the case? I think i'm going to do a sgp full body then a hard case. I've had ipods, etc get scratched up by contaminants getting inside the hard cases. Also, ever notice every protector for the back has the camera cutout? Isn't that the most important surface not to get scratched? I don't get it.

Schiddy- The only LSP I've ever had resist marring to a significant extent is heavily layered KSG; I wouldn't expect wax to help much (if at all) in that regard.

You might want to google a company called "ZAGG"; I use their protective film on a few things and it works well even under pretty extreme conditions.

+1 for Zagg. I put it on my IPad, and it works well. It is the same stuff that they use on the leading edge of helicopter blades to protect them. Tough stuff. Not cheap, but good.

ohhh ok that makes sense then, not really doing much of anything then. Unless you wanted to give a less sticky feel to a screen protector. Ok, so let me ask this question in all seriousness, which is kind of funny since I've been on here long enough that I should know this. What exactly do sealants and waxes do for paint if they don't protect against scratching and marring? Just water, uv protection, and ease of cleaning?

I've used films like ZAGG and invisible shield before, little too orange peely, and sticky feeling for me. Went with:

SGP ultra crystal

SGP iPhone 4 Screen and Body Protector Set Steinheil EX Series - iPhone 4 - Apple iPhone - Cell Phone

and

Power support crystal:

2-piece Film Set: Crystal Front and Back - iPhone 4 - Shop | Power Support USA

Regarded as much closer to the feeling and look of original device, also dry install vs wet. Did TONS of googling trying to figure out which protectors to get.

Hey, I think that's a good question! And one that, heh heh a lot of people here wouldn't dare ask (their loss ;) ) so I'm glad you brought it up.

Yeah, besides UV protection and a sacrificial layer to resist bird-bombs/etc. a little bit, *IMO* to a great extent the LSP just provides a film that sheds dirt/etc. better than bare paint does so you can wash more gently (and thus avoid marring).

And at some level, the LSP does resist/form a barrier against marring; when I'm flushing dirt across the panel with the foamgun there's virtually zero pressure on said dirt, so the minimal protection provided by the LSP is enough. But when somebody presses the dirt against the paint and then moves that dirt under that pressure (say, with a wash mitt used "conventionally") then that minimal protection isn't nearly enough to avoid damage. All a matter of degree...

And the way heavily layered KSG *does* provide more of barrier is one reason why I kinda put it in a different category than most LSPs. My FK1000P sheds dirt like nothing else I've ever used, and resists bird-bombs/etc., and looks nice, and is slick, and etc. etc. etc. But it's not the same "coated in a thick layer of plastic" protective effect that I got with ~6 coats of KSG and with the FK1000P I have less margin for error (marring-wise) than with the KSG by a long shot.

Oh, and yeah (back on-topic!) the Zagg is pretty orange peely, but the stickiness/etc. went away after a while on my application. I went with it based on recommendations from pals who use it over in the Sandbox and figured if it was holding up over there it'd be OK for me. Never researched it as thoroughly as you did though, so I'm glad you found something you like even better.

Good thread, man. It's common knowledge that cell phones are one of the most bacterial ridden things around, kinda like a toilet seat and a hotel room's television remote control. Cleaning your phone regularly is essential!

i wipe down my phone on a regular basis with a microfiber towel as the oils from your face that touch it while talking and having hands that are dirty throughout the day come in contact with it...

Noting that I have a "dumb phone", one of the uber-simple ones made for old folks...one of the things that kills me about my friends's smart phones is the way they're all touch-screen/etc. All that touching/smearing/etc. would drive me nuts; I'd be cleaning it constantly.

The iphone 4 came finally came in. I used a power support matt screen protector because they were available locally. I will be switching to sgp ultra crystal full body kit screen protectors for front, sides, and back (because dust and particles get inside case). And using a ridiculous huge protective case called the otterbox deffender that includes a HARD plastic/plexi like screen protector attached.

Working out pretty well. Wanted the huge protective case until i get used to it. Haven't had a new phone in like 3 years, and haven't had one without insurance like this in 8. The hard plastic protective screen cover of the case does not interfere with touch sensitivity at all, even with that protector sandwiched in there. Crystal clear because i went straight from unboxing to protector and case. Lot of greasy finger printing on plexi screen cover so I waxed it with supernatural. It doesn't get as dirty as easily now and has a fantastic slick feel for operating the phone.

When I get used to not dropping phones lol, I'll prob switch over to just a hard case for the back with the SGP full body kit.
