Anyone use Festool Shinex RAP 150?

Hi Guys,



Anyone use Festool Shinex RAP 150? I want to buy it in the near future, and I was thinking to see some thoughts.

Both Hitachi and Makita make rotary polishers that go down to 600 RPM while the Festool goes down to 400. While there's a difference that matters between 600 and 1000, I don't think you'd be running your machine below 600 much anyway and for those very tight areas where you might want to, both the Makita and the Hitachi have speed control on the trigger that will let you get there.



Festool makes very nice tools but I don't think there's a functional advantage worth the difference in price. I wouldn't be surprised if you could buy both the Hitachi and Makita rotary polishers for what you'd pay for the Festool.



Now, a note about dual action machines, which, if you're only doing your own car and it's not in bad shape might be a better choice.



The action of the Festool 150FEQ Dual Mode Rotex is very similar to that of the Makita 6040. The Makita has a slightly longer throw, but I think it's only 1/32 of an inch more. Festool makes very good equipment and the price reflects it. Last time I compared prices the Festool was nearly twice as expensive as the Makita. I use the Makita myself, outside of price, the functional differences are negligible.



I've also owned a Bosch dual action, but because it has a smaller elliptical movement it wasn't as fast and effective as the Makita. I've also run the Flex side by side with the Makita and the Makita's action gets more work done. This is because the way the way the Flex gets dual action is by starting with a random orbital movement and interfacing the backing plate with housing. while this forces the pad to spin, it takes movement away from pad by making the movement effectively backwards from the movement of the ellipse. The Makita, Festool and Bosch all have planetary gears that force the pad to move elliptically in the same direction as the pad. More movement, more work.



My money went for the Makita 6040 and the Hitachi Rotary.

Sorry I did not read the part number correctly, I have a RO 150 FEQ which is the dual action sander polisher, not the rotary

I got mine from an authorized vendor on ebay. That was back when they had the BING 10% cashback, which is no longer available. So I paid about $450 shipped.
 
Gotcha. I ended up getting one from the lumber store here in Miami. Hopefully I like it more than the makita I have, because That's a great machine...
 
I had one for several months and its good for 2 to 7 inch pad buffing and is beautifully made but I didnt like the sound of the motor, it doesnt have the grunt of the new dewalt or the Makita 9227 and for the 700 dollar price (Australia) its not good enough



it is a sweet machine for jewelling work but not for orange peel removal by rotary or compounding with a strong pad

You're saying it didn't stack up against the Makita? Can you elaborate a bit?
