I got a bunch of chips off my paint that i want to repair and I went to walmart and saw the Duplicolor Scratch fix 2 in 1â„¢ repair kit. The website has more info on it as well.

Seems like a great solution.

Well, i was hoping that someone tried this before and can comment on it. What to be careful of and best way of using it.

The premium kit comes with a primer, clear coat, clear coat sand paper and a finishing compund. the color for your individual car's color is sold seperate but is also sold at walmart.

The premium kit --> $14 + tax

Each Individual paint color --> $ 5.17 + tax

So if you have any experience with duplicolor's Scratch Fix 2 in 1, please help out.

Thanx :wavey

I've found the colors to be a good match for factory paints, and the ability to buy such small amounts of primer and clear to be cost effective for minimal chip repair. Of course, for very small touch-ups, clearcoat is a little unnecessary, and the color coat seems to match the gloss level just fine. Likewise, I have done repairs without using primer, and they worked as well as ones I did 2-3 steps on. It really just depends on how large your chips are. For pinpoint size chips, just get the color. Once you get to pencil-eraser size, the primer and clear might be a good idea.

As far as the "2 in 1," it is a reference to the fact that there is a built in ball-point tip as well as the usual nail-polish type brush inside. Neither method of application has been particularly helpful to me. I still use fine paintbruses for application. As for the sandpaper and finishing compound, I also find that my other supplies are of superior quality.

In all, I guess my advice would be to try just the touch-up paint first, and maybe buy the primer if you need it. The kit with the primer, clear, sandpaper and compound is a little unnecessary and wasteful for most needs.

Things I would seek out to be more helpful in your repairs are a sanding pen (I found a nice 3M one at PepBoys) and some wax remover, as well as a bottle of Mother's Paint Chip Repair (search this forum for Mother's Langka).

I used this on my wifes silver PT cruiser, better match than the factory touch up and the pen worked much better than the brush ever does for me.

Its thinner than the other touch up I have used it took several tries to get it pretty good.

Also it shrunk when it dried and had to add to it after it dried, but that was better than the blob you get with the factory touch up..

Really like the ball point you can really control it.

OK,

So my chips aren't like "pencil eraser size," so I guess I'll just try the factory match color for my paint with some clear coat possibly.

If I don't add the clear coat, do you think that PC use over the painted chips will cause the paint retouch to be removed???

Thanx for the great help.

bump the old thread! Yay!

I just got this for the z3 in my other post... Any other experience with this?

I didn't get the primer or clear. Should I??

Here's the ding I'm working with:

First use PrepSol to clean the area.

Looks like you got bare metal, so I would recommend primer coat first.

Also recommend to use clear or else the repair will have different appearance than surrounding paint.

Most likely this type of repair will not be perfect up close, but you won't notice it from a galloping horse. In other words, it will look much better to a casual observer from a distance, but it will be difficult to make it look perfect when you are inspecting it up close. At the least repair will protect the bare metal from oxidation.

Good luck and post pics.
