What's the best way to learn and start out? I know almost nothing about stock trades, but it seems like with all these new investment companies, it seems easier and cheaper to get into it. I thought about doing penny stocks, but after reading about it a lot of it sounds sketchy. Whats a good way to start out and learn? I want to spend little at first so I can get the feel of how things work.

This is not an easy time to make money in the stock market. There are huge fluctuations based in emotion not rational market numbers. Start by reading the wall street journal daily. I would set up a free account on aol and pretend to buy and sell securities. I had done this with my kids to teach them. You can be a technical stock picker or a observational picker. Both can make or loose you a lot. A technical stock picker analyzes financial information trying to find inconsistencies between a stocks market value and it's actual value and the observational oicker wiill see a Trent like the iPod, iPhone and say hey I will buy Apple. The trick in knowing when to get in and out of any stock. Remember pigs get fed and hogs get slaughtered.

Please don't go risking your hard earned money after reading this or anything on the net. The time around an election is especially volitile so be carefull Take some classes, read some books and practice. When your ready to start use a company that give you the best research tools not the lowest trade price. I personally like and use Fidelity.

As Stockbroker and MBA student in Finance, I can tell you that learning the market takes patients. I am still learning alot. Dont be in a hurry to make money.

Instead of looking at stocks, look at ETFs and mutual funds.

If you want to paper trade, get a Yahoo! account and set up a portfolio in their Finance section. Give the portfolio $50k in starting cash and buy five stocks, each getting as close to $10k in each stock as you can. Then let it sit and watch what happens. It's cheaper to paper trade first, and less risky.

AND dd1101 is giving some good links. We used the StockCharts,FINVIZ and Investopedia in my stock market class a couple semesters ago. The book we used was A Beginner's Guide to Short Term Trading by Toni Turner. We didn't really use it though, seeing as the professor operates a business and knows his stuff. And read as much as you can, watch CNBC, Bloomburg, Fox Business, whatever you have. Just soak in as much as you can for a while until you feel confident in actually moving money

Mutual funds and some bonds is what I have dinero in going at a rate of 34% this year. Stocks is a game that one needs to master and be on it 24/7.

So is there any books you guys recommend? I was hoping I wouldn't have to do any research because this subject seems boring as hell. Maybe a good book for an idiot would do me a lot of good.
