Anyone else now using a sponge clay block?

After the discussion about a month ago about the sponge clay block I wanted to try one so I bought the Hi Tech Magna Sponge. Just had a chance to use it recently on the single stage paint on my 88 Mustang.

I mixed up 2 oz of ONR in 2 gallons of water for a lube and also so I would be able to dunk the sponge repeatedly. I did a section at a time, maybe half a fender, and then wiped it dry with a MF towel. I did the windows first.

It seemed to make the paint feel smooth like clay does and did remove some contaminants that were visible. It was easy to hold and much more forgiving when the lube got a little thin. I did use too much pressure in a couple of spots on the edges of the roof, the paint looked like I had sanded it with 3000 grit paper but I was planning on polishing the whole car anyway. The marks left from using too much pressure polished out easily with M205 and a white pad on my PC and the paint felt really slick afterwards.

I went over a couple of areas with clay after the sponge and the clay didn't seem to pick up anything new.

I'm pretty happy with the sponge block overall and will continue to use it. I don't miss kneading clay at all and the whole process seemed to go faster.

Sorry, no pics.

I agree that it is very easy to use. I put no downward pressure on the sponge, and make numerous passes until it glides smoothly. I haven't noticed any scratches.

I use it, and love it. To cut down on the marring it has to be broken in on glass first. Great excuse to clay the winshield. Cuts my claying time down enormously. Gary Dean did a review on it here not to long ago if you search for it. I am assuming you used the HiTech Magna sponge. I had purchased the Ultima kit which is the same thing but comes with lube gel.

I used it on my last strip down a month ago. It removed sap, bugs and other contaminants from paint and glass.

I performed the claying while washing with CG Citrus Wash stripping dilution. The soap was an adequate lubricant and the clay sponge didn't leave any marring. I rinsed it after every 2'x2' area. It left a smooth paint, ready for polishing with Amigo.
