Anyone buff out curb rash on polished lip?

I have HRE wheels and have a small area of curb rash on my right front lip. Has anyone had experience in buffing out and repolishing a lip (no clearcoat)? If so, what tools/procedures?

I just purchased a set of HRE rims with some minor curb rash.



I looked up the guide on autopia with the porsche wheel...but the HRE's have uncleared polished lips.



This means I can't use putty...



I'm guessing the only way to fix bare metal then is to sand it and try to blend the rash in?? (but sacrificing material while you're doing it)



Can someone confirm?

IIRC, I started with a fine file to try and keep things even, then some fairly coarse sandpaper (240 I think) up through some really fine. I had to reclear mine. Still, I don't think anyone but me could find the spot.
