Have any of you ever put together a "portfolio" of some sort in print?  If so, did you find it worthwhile or a waste of time?  I've thought about putting together a small binder/folder filled with a few pages of info about the services offered, some starting prices, contact info, and finally some nice pictures of jobs that have been done so I could have something on hand that I could show to potential customers to help explain things and give some examples of work that I've done.  I find that it's sometimes difficult to explain things to people so they understand and I've also thought about hitting up some car shows to see if I could pick up some business in which both cases it could be helpful to have to examples on hand to show people.

do it in the form of a tri-fold brochure....list all the services, have different pics of each with before and afters, and some pricing as "starting at"

Generally, auto detailers are not salespeople...or they wouldn't be good at detailing.  With that being said, if you are looking to increase business, then a sort of marketing is the best route.  Since detailing is so mis-understood (can't I just drive through the car wash), educating potential customers that are curious to begin with is an easy first step.  But you want to make it as professional as the detailing work you do.  Be careful not to produce or handout anything that's not classy, quality, and as visually pleasing as the finished product of your detail...or you're simply doing your work a dis-service.

A tri-fold handout would be nice for people wanting a quick look at services and pricing.  Here's a very inexpensive place to order those...but the design work would be done by someone else:

Another idea would be having something to show your best work (high quality pictures in a high-quality book).  This would be something you keep at your shop, at your home, and/or in your car.  This would be your showcase book.  Here's where to get something like I'm talking about:

Just some ideas from a guy that works with marketing to customers every day.  It doesn't matter what the product or service is...people look at everything the same way; and with high-class detailing, you want to talk about customized services, exclusive handling of their vehicle, personalized attention, prestige, and NOT price.  You are giving a customer what they really want...sometimes they just need to see it, hear it, and understand it.  Everyone goes through the car wash, and they wonder why it never looks like it did the day the car was new.  You're showing them it doesn't have to be that way.

Just my 0.02

The IPad is a great idea...I use mine all the time for showing people things.  And it's still a good tool for the guy with the Ford F-150 (I say this because I own an F-150).

BUT, when it comes to that guy driving a $80k car...handing him a wax-fingerprinted IPad in the sunlight were you can barely see it while fumbling to find those couple pictures of the last $80k car you detailed isn't quite the same "effect" as handing him a professionally produced photo gallery book bound in soft leather like the seats in his over-priced, foreign car.  Sometimes THAT difference is what makes him tell a friend about his experience...because it's just that; not a car cleaning, but an "experience".  People remember and talk about experiences.

So that's 0.04 now.  I'm done.

tablet is good as long as its organized and you can pull things up quickly.  Nothing worse than taking 5 min to show two pictures of something you want to convey to a potential client.
