Anybody Offer Paint Repair?

Shaun Carollo

Slave to Swirls
I work full time at a car wash, quick lube, convenience store, gas station, and detail shop (the most reputable within 15-20 min.) They asked if I would like to go to training for an add on service like PDR, interor repair, or paint repair. They want me to pay for the classes, and I'm assuming they will market the services, and tax me a percentage of each job I do (commision.) I also do my own details on the side as well so I am considering doing this to boost my pay rate at my job, and to do this on my own as I will be paying for the class.

Do any of you offer this service, through yourself or if you use a sub-contractor? If so, what do you charge, or what commision do you charge if you contract it out? Any info will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Shaun

i do pdr the same way at the dealership i work at. i am looking into interior repair also. a couple of years ago i looked into mobile paint repair as there was only one person in my area (75 mile radius)doing it. unfortunatly the canadian government is cracking down on mobile painters for enviroment concerns(ozone). they want you to have a paint both with proper ventilation and filtration. your boss will probably set the rates at the door for customers than pay you a portion, almost like a flat rate mechanic. they buy their own tools and then get paid a portion of the money they bring into the shop. it can be worth your while to do it. don't forget doing it at a place like that can get you lots of experience and when you get a name made for yourself you can go on you own if you want and take it all with you as you paid for everything. look at govenment grants and loans. take advantage of what they have to offer. they give away alot of money easch year for training and equipment. check out www.rightlook.com they have a nice selection of tools for all the above trades.

It probably will be me paying for equipment, as well as the training. How do you locate information on government grants? I never even thought of going that route.

Thanks,
Shaun

Your company should be paying for your training not the other way around .

Paint repair training can run from $9000 up to $14,000 depending on where you get trained and what you get in the way of equipment. Talk your boss into paying for it .If you do pay for it yourself make sure your cut is at least 80-20 or better yet 85-15 or 90-10, regardless of what training you deside to go for .(Paint repair , Interior repair or PDR training ) Good luck

my previous employer paid for a week of pdr training which ran $3000.00 cnd. i had to sign a 1 year contract where if i quit i had to pay it back after a year we were even. that may be an option to offer them. if you do pay for your own training make sure you get at least 70% of the charged amount to a customer. or even offer to pay a flat rental fee per month, the rest is yours. so many different ways of doing it.

Along with our detailing we offer windshield chip repair (I do that), interior repair (I do that), one of my partners and I took PDR training and hope to do that next year (right now we have another tech we can call to do the work) and we just set up a deal with a company to our paint touch ups. It looks like they are going to give us about 35% for that.

Just what I wanted to hear guys.

Rollman - I thought it was more along the lines of $2,000-$5,000 with a full set of tools, is it really that much? I also do not want to be tied down to them forever, but i do like Maxim's idea of the one year contract or pay it off within a year.

-Thanks guys

Of the few paint repair packages I've looked at ,Paint Bull $9995 for 5 days of training and equipment and supplies . Perfect Paint System was the same . They also charge $59.95 per month for paint updates . Look around training and cost's vari.

You might want to think about going to this years Mobile Tech Expo this Jan . there's going to be a few paint repair companies under one roof ,among many other mobile based repair training companies.
Best of luck
