LoL ...any Autopians crazy about their lawns ?

My lawn was junk and full of weeds due to several years of neglect and this summer it was a mission to bring back to its full glory. Over here we have a double hard time since herbicides use have been banned and have resort to organic solutions.

My lawn is developing pretty nicely, and 98% of the weeds are gone and looking lush and green. I will post pics soon.

Lawnpian checking in!

I just bought my first lawn(house) a few months ago and have been trying to do my best with it. It's pretty weed free, now I just have to figure out how to get rid of the crab grass. I think it's crab grass anyway. Now I have to get some watering going, it's brown and crunchy right now.

Not good if it is brown, too late to save it. Detach and cultivate the soil and apply new seeding and water. I spend most of my budget on lawn seeds, the secret is seed seed seed !!!, crab grass and most weeds will die out once the lawn is thick and strong. Since there no bans on herbicides in the US, get a selective herbicide that contains 2,4-D and you hsould be able to get rid of those nasty weeds. There are tricks to keeping it green, I learnt how to control the shades of greens this summer.

This spring I did the whole fertilizer / weed killer thing. It was pretty cool, nice dark green compared to my neighbors yard. You could see the line as plain as day. Still have a little bit of henbit to get rid of. I think it's rained once in the last two weeks here. Now the only green is the crab grass. I might go tonight and pick up a sprinkler, try some last minute life saving on it. Organic would be cool to do, kind of a pain I bet. Controlling the shades of green, that sounds interesting. Where have you been learning about lawn care? Any good forums?

That probably depends on the climate and type of grass. Here in Portland if you don't water in the summer, your lawn will go dormant and turn brown, but it comes back very nicely once the rain starts again in the fall.

The problem with most of the stuff they sell at retail outlets is fertilizer which is not required in the summer months. Micronutrients is more important. Its starting to sound like here at Autopia where we can't get good stuff at local outlets and have to resort to specialty places.

You can visit the equivalent of Autopia for lawns here: http://www.lawnsite.com

For crabgrass I lay down a crabgrass preventer in spring and again in mid summer. Works like a charm.

I'm thinking of switching to zoysia grass soon. Only thing I don't like about it is it gets brown in winter, but if its half as durable as people say it is I wont mind :)

Thats not true at all. When grass gets starved of water it goes dormant until the temps drop and the rain starts.

Im on the Scotts michigan fertilizing regimen and i water like a mad man and in the spring i areate. My lawn always looks like a golf course.

Go to Scotts forums, alot to learn but worth it.
