Any geocachers here?

COME AT ME BRO
An added side benefit to me purchasing a handheld GPS unit was this thing called geocaching. I knew about it from doing some research on the units, but never thought I would try it or anything. Turns out there are several caches near my home, and I though I would give it a try. I have not done it yet, but it seems like it would be a fun activity to do with my son when he gets older. Are there any DC'ers who are into this?

Yes - I geocache. Been caching for years. It is fun to do with the kids, but my kids are older and seem to not care for it. I have geocached with my nieces and nephews, ages 5-8 and they really liked it.

Is there anything to know about it before I head out and do it? Specific to geocaching I guess is what I am asking - I am already proficient as far as being in the woods and outdoors (where the caches near me are at).

Thanks.

Each cache normally has a description of what you are looking for and also what size container you are looking for. Some micro caches can be pretty small (like 1/2 the size of a 35mm container. Some caches will be amo cans, plastic containers, or tupperware. some small micro caches might be hanging in a tree. Most caches are buried on the ground covered by leaves or small pile of sticks.

Do not trust your GPS as far as the coordinates go. Try to get within the general area - 10-15 ft or so and use your own gps senses to look for the item. Always remember the hint that most geocache description have. Sometimes the hint are spoilers. for example - at the base of the tree. Some hints might not be so nice - past the bridge.

What i do when looking in the woods is - look for something out of place.

Have fun - send me the geocache numbers of the ones you find.
