I was using my PC with a griots orange pad and 3M SMR to polish out an area of several deep scratches, and I ate through the clearcoat (about a 3/4" section). I didn't think it could happen so easily, but...
Any advice?, spray it with clear out of a can?, body shop??
I would imagine it could, if the pad was contaminated with another product ( such as an aggressive compound) and kept over the same area for an extended length of time.
It was a new Orange pad from Griots. Just some SMR on it. I did it after trying Crystal Guard, which makes the scratches that were there stand out like stop signs. Wonder if it was a thin area, as I never had it happen before on any of my vehicles
And thanks Kneebiter, happen to have some single stage black from a spoiler I just did. Never though about the airbrush technique. Why not just use a clearcoat if the color is still there?
I've never seen my DeWalt Orbital get paint hot enough to burn though it. It's basically the same thing as the PC.
I would say you were just on an area that was already thin from previous polishing. Especially since you said there were scratches in this area and that you had previously hit this area in hopes of removing those scratches.
