Another Project of Wet Sanding and Polishing

Beemerboy

Just One More Coat
I have a solid oak kitchen table that needs refinishing...I bite at wood craft projects but decided I was going to learn one way or the other. I can strip and sand the wood and get it prefect for stain and finish, but that's the part I bite at.

After watching a few utube vids I started to understand how to get a professional finish.

Come to find out staining was easy, laying on the polyurethane wasn't all the tricky but getting the finish smooth was the problem. This one vid I watched made 110% sense to me. Lay a coat of Polyurethane on and let cure over night. Then wet sand with soapy water using 600 grit sand paper, if you watch in the light you can see where the ripples / high and low spots are. The low spots will be shiny the higher spots will be dull from the sanding. It's similar to wet sanding on clear coats

Once that's level clean off and lay another coat and repeat the next day with wet sanding..Then increase to 1000 grit, 1500 grit and I finished with 2000 grit...Then I polished it with my orbital using a polishing pad and Poorboys Pro-polish and it came out like a mirror and smooth as a babies butt.

Here is the two leafs I practiced on to develop the process side by side the old one and refinished one

Looks great! Labor intensive for sure but very very nice! I used poorboys pro polish to polish my dining room table a few months back. Turned out great!
