Another Newb Question thread

A few newb questions.

How many of each color pad do I need to get. I ordered a kit that came with a single orange pad and a single white pad. Can you do a whole car with one pad or do you need to rotate pads in?

Can someone point me to a good tutorial on pad cleaning?

How often will the pads need cleaned?

Is the pad that comes with the PC 7424 good for anything?

I have Menzerna intensive polish and menzerna final poish here. The plan is to use the Intensive polish with the orange pad, the final polish with the white pad, then hand wax. Does this sound like a plan?

I need to know what I should be looking for in a wax. Something decent that wont break the bank. I have dark colored vehicles, Black, Dark blue, and a metallic dark red. I want something that is really going to make the Metallic red look great, while at the same time making the black and blue vehicles look good (the red car is my baby and the highest priority). I think I want a carnuba wax. What does Autopia recommend.

Im really looking forward to giving this PC a workout on all 3 vehicles, as they all need tons of work at this point. The black and blue both look like total crap

It depends. If you use a lot of polish and saturate the pad, you will need to change to allow the polish to be totally broken down. It also depends on the size of the vehicle. Honestly, Id get a couple of each, just in case you drop one or get other contaminants on it.

Nope. But I clean my pads by presoaking them in Dawn, rubbing the polish out, then putting them in the washing machine. Works very well.

It depends. You want to do it after every detail at least.

From what Ive heard, no

Yes. It indeed is a plan. Depending no the nature of the damage however, the IP may not be aggressive enough.

Good luck and tell us how it goes

That was a good response :xyxthumbs

About all I can add it that with some polishes (or *any* polish if you use too much, which most people do), you might need to clean the pad out quite frequently.

If it seems like the pores of the pad are getting clogged with dried product (or anything else), time to clean it out. This will probably happen most often around the outer 25% of the pad's face, so keep an eye on it and clean as needed.

I often/usually clean my pads in mid-job with some Meg's #34. I spray the pad and wipe/blot with a cotton towel. IF that's not enough I take it off and wash it out with Dawn and then squeeze it try in a cotton towel. I do *NOT* spin pads dry on the PC as it tends to launch them off into space.

But yeah...get extras; [stuff] happens and usually at the worst possible time.

Awesome info, i was looking at the poorboys natty blue already. Next question. How does the edge 2000 system work? Ive been looking into it and I like the fact that the pads are double sided and dont require separate backing plates for each size. it seems like the economical way to go instead of spending 20 bucks on each backing plate. As far as cleaning the pads, my concern was more needing to do it mid job than after.

I would recommend two of each(Pads)Yes you can do a whole car with 1 pad.Plus remember you can always flip pad.As far as cleaning pads I just hit it with APC or Dawn & brush rinse with hose and set in Sun,(The ole lady doesn't allow my pads in Her washing machine:argue) they will dry in no time.as far as wax the Megs 105/205 combo followed by Poorboys Natty's(Red & Blue) works well on Dark colors. Its hard to tell you about what Pads to use cause different Manufactures use different colors. Good Luck "Metallica Rocks"

Hi King,

Considering that you use a PC7424, you won't need "a lot" of backing plates. . .

Also, 6" pad are not recommended for correction.

4" are the best, 5" or 5.5" would be the biggest you want to use for correction.

Now, with that said, you'll only need 2 backing plate.

3.5" backing plate for 4" pads

5" backing plate for 5" or 5.5" pads.

Couple of guys here recommended me this for my PC :

5"pads

3-4x orange

3-4x white

2x black

4"pads

2-3x PFW (purple foam wool) <--- more cut than orange and yellow

2-3x orange

2-3x white.

I ended up buying 5.5" CCS pads from Autogeek, cause 5" is very rare. Now, after search, i know that Detailer's Domain carry Uber 5" flat pads.

my order :

3x 6.5" PFW (<---- mistake)

6x 5.5" orange

6x 5.5" white

3x 5.5. black

6x 4" PFW

2x 4" orange

2x 4" white

The main reason why i ordered a little bit more than was guys told me here is simple = i'll be mainly correcting cars that seen winter and have probably never been "true" details of their life. So, i know that my pads will get dirty very fast!

You never have enough of pads like you never have enough of MF towel
