My 05 gmc sierra slt and now the work truck is 9 months past due for a detail. A major problem I'm having right now are the wheels (Chrome U2 52's). The front driver wheel is starting to bubble in the center and also both fronts are stained pretty bad from brake dust. I have scrubbed with soap and water, I had a friend talk me into trying diesel fuel  and still cannot get the streaks out. I am hoping I can find something over-the-counter to clean them. I only have tomorrow to detail it.
Any suggestions please and any idea the cause of my rim bubbling and anything to prevent it from getting worse?

Thanks,

Jamie

For cleaning excessive brake dust (built up for years) you can try Eagle One A2Z. It's strong stuff... spray on, let soak, scrub vigorously with a wheel brush, rinse, repeat.

For the flaking chrome... it's cause by leaving the wheels dirty and unattended. There is nothing you can really do to keep from making them worse except to keep them clean. You could have them re-chromed but ($$$$$$).

 You will definettly need some type of acid wheel cleaner. If this is just old work truck take an S.O.S. pad w/APC and keep it wet. I'm sure anything would be an improvement. If he let them get in this shape to begin with he must not be real picky. Good Luck... :dcrules

i wish i had better advice on your flaking wheels but being in the tire business i can tell you for sure that it will only get worse.

First, is your wheel aluminum and chrome. if yes, then i would suggest use them as much as possible but when ever you have a chance to replace them do so. whats going to happen is that more and more chrome will start to fall/peel off once it gets to the aluminum it will produce a white powder. Just like metal produces rust when exposed to moisture. no way to fix that other than chrome the whole wheel and it will cost some money.

The other thing is to replace them with other wheels. you can get new or used wheels and it might me more cost effective, unless you can find a wheel like the one you have used some where. good luck

The bubbling is something that has got under the coating...it might be from the factory..wheel wasn't super clean when it was sprayed and the coating is starting to lift...for getting the diesel streaks out...go get a paint cleaner...OTC you can find Megs Deep Crystal at any local auto store...use a cotton applicator and tons of elbow grease...this will clean up all the streaks and bring back to shine to the clear that is left...if you looking for repair on the bubble areas...have a look at this site for someone that is close to you...I have a local guy and he rocks on rim repair
