And if I don't IPA the Polish ?

So I'm working on a re-painted 1970 442. I used M105 w/wool and now I'm polishing w/ M205 and a B&S Blue on a Flex 3401.

The 442 has some issues - a few paint cracks, road rash, but overall it's in great shape. It's going to a car show so I had planned on using 3M hand glaze. Then the thought occurred to me, "Me, what's the harm in skipping the final IPA/Eraser step"

Well, I didn't have an answer.

Is there any downside other than filling?

LeMarque- For this situation I don't see a downside.  The M205 oils will dissipate and then the looks will suffer, but the 3M IHG oughta help take up the slack.

Working on it as we speak - there goes my Saturday. I don't see why the oils won't play together nicely; but I'' let you know

Not what I was hoping for. I was hoping for WET . Topped it with Pinnacle Sovereign which on a yellow Merc I did wassweet.

The glaze was a bear to remove. Never again.

LeMarque- IMO it looks fine, and "period correct"...its paint isn't supposed to look like what's on a new Lexus.  Yeah, the IHG can be a little tricky, sometimes it's best to not bother trying to get it all buffed off but rather apply the wax on top of the remaining residue and buff 'em both off together.

Wonder how soon it'll need redone, I would've used 476S on it just so it'd stay OK for a few months.

On the subject...From what I've been told, IPA doesn't eliminate polishing oils. a Solvent based cleaner needs to be used for this. Can anyone back this statement up?

Beginning to wonder about using IPA or PrepSol

Hers a couple of good reads:

JoeyV- IME the IPA does work, just not as well as some other approaches.  Guess it might depend on the polish/oils in questions, but it's generally an OK approach.

I myself use TOL's PrepWash (AKA "Akyra Clean" or something like that, can't ever remember the new name..).  Others use Eraser or wash the car with ValuGard's "A".

I generally avoid using solvents like PrepSol for stuff like this.  I do use them when repainting...which is what they're made for.  For a more gentle, presumably safer, solvent, try Mineral Spirits.

Or keep a gallon of ValuGard's New Car Prep on hand.  That's what I use for jobs requiring a solvent-approach for cleaning stuff like greasy/oily messes in the engine compartment and for the suspension.  NCP *IS* paint-safe.  I've never used it for polishing oils though.

That car is gorgeous

Here is your problem....

You went from 105/wool which is very aggressive to 205/blue which is very light.  205 fills and has a more reflective look compared to a deep gloss.  That is too big of a gap, and part of the reason you are not getting the results you are after

You need the following:

-A middle step between the 105 and 205 step - I suggest D300 on a hydrotec tangerine pad or MF pad

-You need a better finishing polish like menzerna 4000 or 4500, sonax perfect finish, HD polish

my 3 step on that car would be:

105/wool

D300/mf pad

sonax perfect finish/black pad

I usually finish w/4500 but made the mistake of thinking the glaze would make it 'slippery'.

Surprisingly, the 105/wool didn't leave much if any of a haze. It was a light cut variety. And the clear was super hard.

BTW, it measured 17+ mils!

But next time I'll try your recommendation.

LaMarque- I do sorta wonder whether the M205 and IHG have concealed micromarring from the M105...guess time will tell.

And yeah, I too always do an intermediate step after getting really aggressive with M105.  I know other people don't, but it works best for me that way.

Oh ye of little faith ...

The D300 step, I can see that and I'll add it to my repertoire, for sure.

I try and get the car back in a month or so for a wash and look see. I double check for marring one more time.
