Ambulance VS. HD Polish/SPEED/Meg's #16 *WORK IN PROGRESS* DAY 1

Hello everyone!

Here's my first write up involving the free samples that the folks at 3D/HD were so kind enough to give to some members of the forum.

This detail will involve using 3D/HD Polish & Speed on a 2002 Ford E450 Type III Ambulance. Some folks probably have seen the detail I posted last month involving this rigs twin sister....now it's this ones turn!

Both rigs are babied to no end from me so the paint is already in very good shape considering the job it was built to do and the amount of hands that touch the vehicle. It has it's fair share of RIDS and swirls, paint is fairly soft and can usually knock the majority of the swirls down in one pass with 105 and even UC.

That being said, I was at the right place at the right time when Mr Dave Fermani posted the thread on the free Polish & Speed promo, it's pretty rare for me to be at the right place and time so I jumped at it, free pads too woo-hoo!!

Meguiar's products usually left me pretty satisfied but I wanted to see what else is out there and this was the perfect chance to try out new products.

First Impressions;

My swag arrived at my doorstep around noon on Tuesday while I was here at work. After a long 7 hours I got to the house to see my equally excited 2 1/2 y/o daughter waiting beside the box. The box looks like it got roughed up a bit by the delivery company but upon opening it up all was good! As I checked out the bottles of Speed & Polish, my daughter took invintory of the 6 HD pads, afterwards she proudly proclaimed them as her property.......especially the green pad.

The bottles seem to be pretty well put together, graphics are eye catching yet not overkill. Text and color scheme makes it easy to read even in the finer print. Directions are also clear and easy to understand. After cracking each bottle open I notice a pleasant grape scent.....quickly close them up so the the youngin doesn't get any ideas.

Day 1;

Since I had already washed, detar, and clayed the rig I was able to go straight to polishing. Day one I planned on hitting the roof as it hasn't seen polish or any kind of LSP since it was delivered to us in 2002! I've washed it several times in the past 4 years, never really gave it much thought on shining that part of the rig until I saw the damage done to our sister companies 22 year old rig that has just been retired earlier this year.....rust everywhere.

My process was simple.......SPEED, a G110v1 w/Meg's 7in SB 2.0 yellow pad at a speed between 5 & 6, and NXT 2.0 -liquid-. At first I primed the pad with QD and applied 5 - 6 pea sized drops onto the pad and worked it for about 3 minutes. I worked in sections ranging from 2x2 on upwards of 4x4 to see how well it would fair working a large area.

Enough of me talking, let's see what SPEED has to say!

So I was almost done with the roof and what happens? The g110v1 decides it doesn't want to play anymore! The cord has been separating from the polisher for several months now, I knew it would soon call it quits and of course it would do it on the ambulance!!! With about 20% of the roof to go, I grabbed a foam hand pad and knocked the rest of it out. With the machine, SPEED was very quick to clean and shine the paint up. As expected going at it by hand took a bit more effort. Wiping SPEED off after the machine application was a breeze, in fact I has by far been the easiest product I've taken off to date, by hand it was a bit more difficult but by far not the worst IME.

All done!

My apologies for the less then stellar quality of the pics, at this time all I have is my IPhone to take pics. My cam's battery charger is MIA.

I had cut the roof down the middle, once the left side was done, I applied NXT 2.0 via black pad. Due to the g110v1 going bad on me, the right side didn't get the additional LSP protection which is cool with me as I can gauge how long SPEED's protection will last on a large horizontal surface.

Initial Impression on SPEED's performance; AWESOME! I do believe it will be the go to product for these ambulances. At this point I don't think I need to 3 step it anymore, SPEED is just that FAST and very effective! I am very satisfied with this product due to it's low learning curve and outstanding results! By hand on a neglected surface without claying or doing any kind of hardcore deconning will require some patience and elbow grease, you may not be able to correct minor/moderate defects as easily as a nicely prepped surface but the results should be almost as good as going at it with a machine (newbie thoughts here!)

Thanks for looking, Tuesday I'm going to test HD Polish on the cab with Meg's #16 as the LSP so stay tuned!

That's a pretty big turn around on the roof! Nice work. Glad this product is working our for you. Keep us posted on the durability.

Thanks Dave and Donald! I was taken back with how fast I was able to get the paint back to being white again (pic quality doesn't do it justice, it was more of a beige with a grayish tint to it). All I did was a simple wash the Friday before starting off with the HD products, dusted it off and straight to SPEED on Thursday. Definitely not going for flawless finish on the roof but I'm very pleased with the end result.

Daniel, I think I may have pinched the wires in the cord. Long story short, the cord was cut and the wires spliced in the area of the pinch and now it's purring perfectly.....but I don't trust it. This one is getting retired shortly, when it does I'm gonna have it re-corded and put in as a reserve or put a small BP and use it for some of the more hard to reach spots.

Thanks again guys!

Sean.

I'm impressed!

Bone boxes are relatively easy to do as it is mostly flat surfaces, it just a lot of real estate to clean and polish!

Sorry for the delay everyone!

I'm pretty much all finished with this subject and to be honest, I'm extremely pleased with the end results!

The cab was hit with HD Polish w/Megs #16 x2 as the LSP. The Polish was applied via a revived G110v1 w/HD's new cut/polish pad. Only one pass was done due to time constraints and the fact that I was after no more then 50% correction as being an ambulance, it's gonna get hammered in no time! The amount of gloss and reflection it gave with just one pass (3-5 up down and side to side) is utterly amazing, leaving a nice slick and clean surface to the #16 to lay on. I'd say I got about 60-70% correction on just one pass and the paint on this puppy is finicky to say the least. With two hand applied thin layers of #16, the rig has that nice rich -n- crisp white that I was looking for!

Onto the box, it got nothing but SPEED. Once pass, speed 6 on HD's polishing pad (blue), and again I'm floored with the results. It's fast on and equally fast off. Leaves the gloss and reflection on par with the Polish on the cab! Cutting ablity wasn't as good as the Polish, I'd say I only got 40 to 50% but again, I wasn't looking for it on the ambulance. I'm sure if I used a more aggressive pad and invested more time I'd get more swirl and RIDS removal.

On the left side, I experimented to see just how fast I could go with SPEED, throwing caution to the wind, I put the pad to the pain and went to town.....done in about 40-45 minutes with awesome results....still had plenty of swirls and RIDS but ohh my the gloss and reflection was on par with using 105/205 combo that usually takes me 5 or 6 hours to complete on one side alone!

The rear of the rig received nothing so I could gauge how well these two products performed. While the back is still in nice shape, there was obvious that it didn't "pop" out like the rest of the rig did.

Anyway onto the pics and I'll let them do the talking. I found my battery charger for my cam (just a simple point and shoot), the quality isn't as good as I hoped for but anyway, here they are!

Thanks for looking everyone! Any comments, tips, and advice is GREATLY appreciated.

There is more on the way including some sweet beading shots.....STAY TUNED!

Thanks Thomas and vtextc! She was looking pretty good as of Friday, but I have no doubt she's a little dirty now since it's rained a few times since. O'well, she'll be easy to clean up on Tuesday morning!

Saluting your Passion

a true heart of a detailer that conquer the giant with joy

Thanks for posting...now everyone have reason to contribute to our all our Medic Hero's.....

Thank you

Thank you very much KC's for you kind words! It's pure motivation to go the distance!! She is a giant and she puts up a fight, but in the end it is I that is victorious......at least for a few days! :lol

DaGonz, they are relatively easy except for the front light bar assembly, it's a real pain to contort yourself to get into the hard to reach spots...ironically that's where all the insects like to go for their final resting place. Once it has a nice clean surface, it is easier to keep them up but if ya let them go, it'll bite ya in the long run!

Thanks for looking!! :xyxthumbs

Sean,

It was great to see these rigs in person today! They look great. I just wanted to share the photo we took of us while we were there! Listen here at 3D Manheim we see your passion for for detailing and how much it must be to keep these rigs maintained. We have decided to volunteer some more products for you to keep these vehicles looking nice. Scott will be stopping by next week with a nice care package for you at our cost to help maintain these cars. Once again nice chatting. :Banane35:

Paul,

Just to clear it up. Sean actually bought these products today from us. He needed some for his personal use. Then as he said he was using his own products to maintain these rigs. On the way home I was talking with Scott and we decided to help him out. So he is gonna get a very genourous package next week!

Cool. I was refering to the offering of the generous package you mentioned. I think its great when people help out in the communnity and also those that reward those who do.

To say that I'm very humbled is quite an understatement! It's funny seeing Barry at work in his write ups and then to see him standing in front of my office door today, I was speechless to say the least! We talked a bit about the rigs. Our company runs on average of around 1000 calls a year, we're in a mostly rural/suburban type community and I do have a gratuitous amount of down time. Playing on the computer and watching TV can only occupy me for so long. With that I'm usually doing something to these rigs. It started out that I used them as my "guinea pigs" when trying out new (to me) products and the detailitis always pushed me to go for more! 95% of the products I used came out of my own pocket......much to the wifey's dismay, but I just can't go out to someones house with a filthy rig, it's not fair to our patients who call on us in what is most likely their worst hour.

Barry I don't think I can ever say THANK YOU enough for to you and Scott for your very kind offer! Meeting you today and with this donation, it only motivates me to go the distance in my quest for shine! I know for sure my higher ups will be just as happy as well. My partner and our Medics who run with us.....not so much, why??? because I have plans for the other rigs there now, and they know how I get when I get into my zone.....you guys know what I'm talking about! Sure they're not as attention grabbing as say muscle cars, exotics, and luxuries.....But again thanks to Barry, Scott, and 3D.........

...............THEY'LL SEE ME ROLLING!!!!!!!

Thank's again brother! :usa
