Am I crazy?

Hey Moe!

New member
I have been reading the posts on this website for six months now. One thing that I notice is that I tend to wash my car more than average.

I do a good prep on the car when I am into clay/polish/wax mode. It is now topped with 845IW, which I am really getting to like here during winter.

However, I wash my car a lot. During warm weather months, at least twice a week. I use good sheepskin mitts, lots of soapy Griot's wash, and the two-bucket method, of course drying with WW towels. I don't get into doorjambs, etc, everytime, but they do get attention.

During winter, I will go to the do-it yourself bay. I just wet it down, and wash it. I will do that ASAP after a road salt event, provided it is not too frigid.

If it gets above freezing, then it's back to the driveway for the regular wash, which I did twice this week, since we had a mild week. I wanted to go to QEW, and I have it, but I needed to heat the garage, and Christmas and my daughter's college tuition got in the way.

Yes, I do QD, and I am learning to use it instead of a wash when the car is just dusty, or very minor dirt.

All things considered, I feel like a "wash Nazi."

I don't mind washing a lot. I enjoy it; for me, it's therapeutic. I enjoy working toward a result that I will like.

But, am I crazy? Am I excessive? To steal a Pink Floyd line, am I on "the dark side of the moon?"

I wouldn't say your crazy. I wash around once a week and people I know think I'm crazy. I think the amount of washing you do may be overkill in terms of preserving the finish of the paint. However, if you want your car to look "just washed" the only way to keep it that way is to continually wash it. The downside IMO is no matter how careful you are washing will induce some marring in the paint. So, the more you wash the more marring you'll get. The more marring you get, the more often you'll polish, wax, etc. So, it would seem to me that basically you are causing more work for yourself in the long run. If you have nothing else to do and you don't want to keep your car long term then I say go for it!!

nah. I wash just as much as you. 2x a week is my norm. QDing inbetween that time. Unless it rains, then another wash comes out because i wont touch after rain dirt and grime with QD spray. Needless to say, I go through alot of soap =/ But hey, I enjoy getting out there, having the sun out (early morning or late evening sun that is) and just having a 1 on 1 connection with the car (yes, i know that's cheesy)

Sure . . . we’re all crazy here at Autopia :LOLOL

You know, I think everyone would agree that it’s half therapeutic and half self-satisfaction. For me personally, I deal with an extreme amount of stress on a daily basis . . . much more than the average bird can handle. When I wash my car, the tension and anxiety washes away (no pun intended). Though I’ve been called nuts my entire life, truth is I am crazy. Crazy being obsessive compulsive Type A Personality.

Now let’s look at the facts. I have always made money (over the KBB, NADA value) selling my cars. My cars are so well taken care of that buyers have zilch to negotiate with. And as a matter of fact, selling my last car made me a cool G over what I paid for it. Maintaining the appearance of your car does reap its reward. Call me crazy all you want

Well if that is crazy you are certainly at the right spot to be amounst the norm. We all have our foibles. Just because we have them does not make us crazy.

Keep doing what gives you pleasure. I know that is what I do. :xyxthumbs

everyone is CRAZY about something..we're just crazy about our rides!! i'll do you one better about resale, etc.. the FIRST person who comes to look at my cars/trucks/boats ALWAYS buys them... well at least for the last 25 years!! oh yea, and at top, top dollars every time. but that's not why i'm anal about my stuff. i REALLY enjoy taking care of them AND having them look good all the time. some of my clients ask me why my cars never get dirty...i just tell them that when i ordered the car i specified the paint that doesn't get dirty (i've always owned WHITE rides, without exception). they never ask again.

wash/wax you brains out because we're all right there with you!!!

There is no dark side of the moon! Listen more carefully next time! :D

And everything under the sun is in tune

But the sun is eclipsed by the moon.

There is no dark side of the moon really.

Matter of fact it's all dark.

To the majority of the population, yes...you are crazy. To the other members here, nah...you're just like the rest of us. I wash my car 2x a week in the warmer months too. And when it gets above freezing in the winter I QEW it too.

I hate to admit it, but it's 34*F today and I'm about to spend at least 3 hours detailing the Protege. :nervous:

Don't be shy 34 degrees, in your neck of the woods you are good to go. I did a complete detail yesterday it was 39 for the high :getdown

As long as you're not washing so much that it compromises your LSP or interferes with other aspects of your life then you're not washing too much. And you can always apply more LSP ;)

The more often you wash the less likely it is that things will gradually start to degrade without your noticing it. And the less likely it is that dirt will really bond to the surface and end up causing marring when you do get it off.

But I gotta admit that I don't wash as often as I used to by a long shot. Spending so much time on *anything* that it puts your life out of balance is, IMO a bad idea. Life is short, and there are lots of things to do.

I wash every other day and QD twice a day (once in the morning before I drive off and once when I come home and park for the rest of the day. I thought I was "enthusiastic" but you guys showed me that I am way over the edge.... :o

Completly agree, Accumulator clearly has wisdom and balance, I am still trying to find both :up
