Hello Autopia,
I was going to tackle a chip on my godmother's 95 caravan but the weather has been down and temperatures hasn't been over 60 so i am fearing the paint bonding onto the paint and curing in a sufficient amount of time.
i have been reading the archives and David B's articles and many other sources for paint touch up information. This is not a small job so i intend to fix it right the first time and I do not want to spent $$$$ to repaint the panel. I purchased the touch up paint (metallic silver and white to mix in a cup to blend with the paint and account for the fading the sun has caused), primer, clear coat, and a bottle of a chemical that turns rust into a primer. I will use the other primer just in case because the rust remover/primer states for light colors follow with a true primer. I have 3M Imperial wet/dry 400 grit sand paper for roughing up the initial rust and surrounding area where the paint has bubbled up. i have on order a Makita rotary to blend the repair, along with both Menzerna polishes, and going to get some 3M Perfect it III and Meguiar's Body Shop line soon. Meguiar's 2000/3000 grit Finesse it Sanding Blocks will also be purchased (Should I also get 1500 grit sanding blocks for inbetween coats sanding, I have some 3M Imperial wet/dry 2000 grit sand paper but I like the blocks for control and flatness.) I also got the necessary safety equipment, gloves, safety glasses, and a dust mask. I will get some artist's paint brushes to put the touch up paint on along with some syringes from a family member whose in the medical field to mix the touch up paint.
Which brings me to the topics question. PrepSol. where do I get it? I have not found it yet. all i see at the stores (Laquer thinner and 3M tar, bug, wax remover, aircraft remover, and some other checmicals used to strip things.)
Are there any alternatives to Presol, Denatured Alcohol? A mix of rubbing alcohol and water?
Thanks in advance,
Jason
PS, the size of the chip is about the size of a half dollar. About a 1 and /2 inch circles or so....... Expect a long thread on this with step by step pictures.
