alcohol use in detailing

At what point am i supposed to use alcohol in the detailing process? And what type of alcohol is it, just rubbing alcohol? I've read a few threads where cars were being wiped down with a 50/50 mix of alcohol/water. When is it necessary to use this?

One use is a wipe down after using a polish which contains "glazing oils", so you're able to determine the true state of the surface. That is, of course, if you're striving for perfection. And, yeah, it's rubbing alcohol or, more correctly, isopropal alcohol (99%) mixed 50/50.

lol...in my pre-autopia days, I would have answered "I don't mind a beer or two while I detail".

As superstring said, 50/50 leaves the surface "bare" - all polishing oils are gone to see the true state of the car surface. Also, many LSP's need a bare surface for proper bonding.

I use 91% straight IPA straight out of the bottle. I use in between each polishing step so there is nothing hiding in between steps and no cross contamination within lubes.
