air bag deployed in accident

my son was in a minor accident with his 92 ford aerostar recently. insurance company called the car totaled. my son wants to get into repairing it. the main problem area is the air bag, which deployed during the accident. it seems to me that this could be replaced with a new steering wheel. has anybody else been in this situation before?

I was in a situation a few weeks ago when the airbags in a Mustang I was in deployed. I believe that the computer or something in the car needs to be reset for the airbags to work again, plus if it gets done wrong (by him) it could cause major problems. Airbags aren't cheap. The incident that I was in cost $1600 just for replacement bags, plus labor was well over 2000. Why not take the insurance money and pick something else up?

Look on eBay people sale airbags on there all the time. Please have a profesional do the air bag replacement they can go off and possiblely kill you.

Kenny you will not only have to replace the airbag you will also have to replace the sensors that triggered the bag which should be located in the bumper of course. Then a ECM reprogramming will also most likely need to be done. That is probably the main reason the insurance company totaled it. To much to fix

Exactly, too much to fix. The total estimate was over $2000.00. The car is worth maybe $1200.00. The accident was my son's fault, so he gets no dollars from the insurance co. I did not have collision on the car because it wasn't worth it. He would have gotten a check if the accident was not his fault.

Somebody told me this is an easy fix. Get a used steering wheel. Involves 8 bolts...easy. I don't think so.

You do not have to buy a whole steering wheel you should be able to buy just the air bag. It should be held in place by two bolts on the backside of the steering wheel.
