AC/Heat vents

I'm looking for ideas on how to clean the ac/heat vents. It's always very tedious and time consuming cleaning each slat with a cleaner and MF. After i get them clean an occasional dusting with a detail brush keeps them good for a short while. Anyone have any neat tricks or ideas on how to expedite that cleaning process? Tools and chemicals you use?
 
I use cotton swabs and Plexus and yes it time consuming.



If memory serves BillD has a method for cleaning them...?

I spray Stoner Xenit ( blue can ),brush it with a boar hair brush, hit it with a blast of compressed air, and do a final wipe with a MF.
 
spray bottle of simple green and some of those throw away foam paint brushes, fit the slats perfect
 
My way or the express way?





As a detailer;

My way is a Las-stik dust cloth with a small Snap-On flat head screwdriver or equal. This is my detail system on all cracks and holes. Once it is clean it only needs a quick wipe or brush, thereafter. No vinyl protectant, unless requested.



Express way for me is brushed and then vinyl protectant sprayed then compressor sprayed at 40psi into the vents. This cuts the time almost in half but makes me feel like i am cheating, as dirt is still there.
 
The new Meguiars interior detail brush is really nice. It gets deep into the vents (the bristle length is adjustable) and they have an aerosol interior spray that I use to spray into the vents. This works if the vents aren't very dirty. If they are, then cotton swaps and a general purpose cleaner work well but it is time consuming.

Scott, What is the Name of the Aerosol spray? That sounds pretty good.
 
I just spray a protectant in the vents(light mist) and blow it around with an air hose. Takes all the dust with it as it blows.
 
I usually spray some sort of Biocide into the vents, as I've read that mold etc. grows in them, them gets blown out, into your lungs when you switch from heat to A/C and such. Some vinyl dressings have one "built in" (Like Natural Look), but sometimes I spray some disinfectant into the vents. There are also dedicated vent cleaner sprays that are supposed to work very well for that, but I haven't personally tried any yet.

Interior trim detailer, I think. Looks real shiny when you first spray it on but it quickly fades to a satin sheen.
