About to get a PC 7424XP - which pads?

Hiya guys,

I tried posting this earlier but it didn't seem to go through...not sure why. Anyway, I apologize if this is a double-post.

I have been following all the similar threads about this issue, and honestly at this point I feel like I am getting *more* confused the more I read! So, I am looking for some advice from the experts...

I will be working primarily on my 2007 VW GTI in black magic. Paint appears to be in good shape; it has lots of swirls, but they don't seem to be too deep. I will be starting with the sample sizes of Meg's 105 and 205, and am pretty much decided on getting a 7424XP. I'm just not sure about which pads to get.

So, please make recommendations and/or help me decide what to get. Most kits seem to come with 6.5" pads, but it seems like a lot of people here are recommending 4" pads. If I was only going to start with one size (and then determine if I need more later), what should it be? I need to figure out the right combination of pads, too. I am thinking of 1 yellow, 2 orange, 2 white, and 2 grey, or getting 3 white and 1 grey (the yellow is for a friend's car that has pretty bad oxidation; hopefully it will not see any use on my car). I am also really hoping to get a kit, if anyone can recommend one that fits the bill!

One more quick question, if anyone is still reading: I am hoping I can get away with just using 205 on my paint, but I am ordering both 105 and 205 to experiment. Anyone want to weigh in on what they think will work?

Thanks,

Gary

You'll find out what works when you start. :D

I wouldn't be surprised or ashamed if M105 is needed as well.

I've only done a few cars myself so far (XP), but I think you've got a good set up going with the 4" pads, 105/205, and having a nice selection and being ready for worse-case.

Everything from there should just be technique, practice, test panels etc!

If you want a middle ground in terms of pad size you can with 5.5" Uber pads from Detailer Domain. I use them with my PC and find they work great. Espeically the green polishing pad.

In terms of how many, get more polishing pads than anything else.

They don't make a kit - I don't think - but I just wanted to give you another option.

Hey - I have a 08 GTI the same color! Great car and fun too. I'd look at PAC, they have several kits that would fit your needs, look under the KBM ones.

I really like the new Meguiars 7" pads since you can clean them in the washing machine but for any real correction using a DA buffer, you'd be better off with 5.5-6" pads.

You should be able to use 5.5" - 6" pads with no problem on the PC XP. Save the 4" pads for the tight spots where the bigger pads don't fit as well or those areas that need more correction. Doing the whole car with 4" pads would take way longer than needed.

I agree with the 5.5" pads for the pc. Meg's 105/205, but you need to read on how to use 105.
