a vibrations...

What is it that causes it in the machine? Anyway to get rid of it. Namely the griots da. I love the power and the cut, but the vibrations are bad.

Don't tell me to try the rupes....its not for me. I have the 15 and it will be up for sale soon as I can get some pics of it. Too slow working for me (maybe just used to the gg power, but whatever)

So can someone explain what it is that makes the thing vibrate so much...same with the pcxp and the megs g110 and the rest of them

Pads not on evenly, bad bearing in the gear head, backing plate is out of balance or starting to come apart?

Who knows, guess you will have to do some diagnois.

I should have been more clear...

I mean from a technical standpoint. As in right out of the box from factory. Not that my machine may have issues...just the standard DA vibrations...what's the reason a day vibrates vs a rotary doesn't??? Hope that explains more clearly

In short, the head is not perfectly balanced. A wheel spinning on a single axis vibrates from not being balanced(think car wheel unbalanced). You have a free-spinning head on an axis that moves in a circular motion. Imo, there's a world of difference in vibration in a forced rotation like the Flex 3401 and a free-spinning DA.

Even well balanced engines have harmonic dampeners for the same reason. Once you get to a specific RPM, the offset of balance makes a big deal. If you spin a heavy object very slowly, you don't feel the difference in its being balanced or not. Speed up the RPM and at a certain point you will feel it. Further up in RPMs and it will become detrimental and failure will eventually occur. Imo, this is a big reason rotaries will outlive DAs.

It all boils down to balance.

And note that the GG is a lot *better* in this regard than many RO polishers! I'm kinda sensitive to this (the PC is a serious problem for me; I worry about "white finger" and don't want to permanently injure myself polishing some car)...the best I've used with regard to vibration is the Cyclo, but it doesn't cut the way the GG (or my Flex 3401) does.

Why Low Vibration is Important

It has been proven that operators face significant risk of muscle, joint and nerve damage caused by the inherent vibration of power tools. By reducing the amount of vibration you can reduce muscle and joint fatigue as well as the potential risk for permanent damage, as described in ISO 5349-1:2001- Mechanical vibration -- Measurement and evaluation of human exposure to hand-transmitted vibration.

A Dual action machine (random elliptical orbit ( OPM) is one that has two controlled components of the backing plate / pad; orbiting around a centre spindle, while the baking plate / pad freely spins on its own axis. The backing plate mounting is off-centre, as the drive rotates centrifugal force moves the backing plate in an elliptical motion (due to its 5/16-inch offset) to balance this motion a counter weight is fitted to counteract machine vibration

Centripetal_force_zps711eba9f.png

Centripetal force is a force that makes a body follows a curved path: it is always directed orthogonal to the velocity of the body, toward the instantaneous centre of curvature of the path [1]

All other parameters being equal, a machine featuring a large stroke (or offset) will create more centripetal force than a machine featuring a small stroke, because centripetal force is the primary element that causes the backing plate to rotate.

Therefore, if you use a machine with a large stroke size, you should generally see an increase in random pad rotation versus an identical machine featuring a short stroke. If the orbit offset is doubled, the speed of the backing plate is also doubled; however the abrasive ability is increased more than double

Anti-Vibration Gloves

Gloves with anti-vibration features are increasingly used to reduce impact vibrations or shocks transmitted to the hands of power tool operators. Ergoair - RETURN

Find someone with a Rupes 21 to let you try before you write them off completely....

thats what I have been told...

the 15 for polishing, the 21 for cutting...and a 5" plate on the 21 for insane cutting ability

I'm going to be around on Thursday at Crevier. I'd like to see the Rupes if you have time. I thought the Rupes had both more opms and a larger orbit so your observations are interesting.

BTW, I revised my technique since we last met in response the results you were getting with the RO.

Check my videos over youtube youtube.com/dacavalcante

There you'll find some 240fps videos from my old v2 gg 6 rop, insane vabration.... I've sold it and now I'm with a g110v2... Which is less powerful but still do the job with less vabration.

I'm also using a Dynabrade dual action head with my dewalt 849x. 18mm orbit and even less vabration than the g110v2, very smooth.... But it's a quite heavy combo.

Even the 15mm machine will cut faster than a GG machine, did you put the washer in Eric??, if not you are making a big mistake............

no i didnt.

it seems as though you have to slow way down.

guess Ill have to do the washer mod like todd told me to do. and report back. I really want it to work for me...its MUCH smoother!!!

Too slow working? I went from this;

To this in two passes.

The clear is very hard. I would have probably burned up my PC and every pad I have trying to get that thing done, not to mention it would taken four times longer.

At first I was intimidated by the Rupes slinging a 6 inch pad on a 21mm stroke. After using it for a couple days I don't go to my PC unless I have a small area to work. It is amazing how much faster a 6inch pad on a 21mm throw cuts compared to the PC w/ a 5 inch pad.

Get the washer mod like TODD told you to do.......................... where do I even start to say how funny I think that statement is, anyway put in the washer and proceed on.

That and the fact that he sold Eric the 15 and not the 21...
