A little ticked with my UDM

So... I've had this machine for about a month and LOVE the results. HOWEVER, I have a problem and it really ticked me off yesterday! I was putting product on my car and standing on small two step ladder to get to the hood. I had put product on the pad and somehow hit the little up/down swich on the UDM and  got sprayed with product all in the face and all over my car!!! Not amused! This seems to be a real problem with this machine and I'm about to send it back! I've accidently hit it on several occasions and it is just too easily turned on... (must be a man...) But seriously... is there any fix for this? It does seem like the more "broke in" the machine the easier the on/off is to slide! I dont want a repeat of the other day... I actuall had to flush my eyes with water for about 15 min to get the product out my eyes! Not good! Dangerous if you ask me! What is a girl to do:wall

Yup. I just got my switch replacement. That thing ticked me off so bad though that I haven't ever put the switch on. I just put it in the cabinet with the disgraced UDM. It isn't on the disgraced product shelf yet, but it is on the shelf below it. I'll get the switch replaced and give it one last chance before I trade it for a couple bottles of Wolfgang.

Porter Cable is such a known quality brand they have been around for years. I don't understand why someone would want to buy this new brand when you have no idea about quality and durability.

Not that I would buy a UDM , but I see on their website that they offer $50 dollars off if you send in your old PC. Anyone ever do that.

Let me chime in here...I too was quite irritated by the "switch" problem. However, after replacing it with the warranty one I am very pleased. They really did a good job with the mod....I don't see how one could accidentally turn it on now. I know it will make it off your "almost" disgrace shelf jngrbrdman once the switch is replaced.

I'm not 100% sure, but the UDM might need to be registered to receive the free switch upgrade. It'd be a good idea to register it anyway, so here is a link:

Ultimate Detailing Machine Registration

I got one about two weeks ago that already has the new switch. I haven't used the UDM on a car yet, but doing a short test comparing it with the same size pad on my PC I was impressed with the extra power (torque). I hadn't planned on buying one of these, but it was on a short one day sale at a price I couldn't pass up, and after my short comparison I'm glad I did.

The UDM has much less vibration than the PC which allows for a longer polish with one hand. I flip the UDM around to different positions with one hand no problem and with the PC it would vibrate so much more it would fatigue my hand alot sooner. I think it is a nicer machine myself minus a few tweeks they are fixing.

Well.... heard it was a good product, folks had success with it, and if it were not for the switch I'd really LIKE it! Betcha you went out and bought the new Xbox, Ipod, New model Car... when there were proven other choices?:surrender

I registered my UDM and will contact them via the web site! Thanks for the site info! I would like the adaptation as I've been using mine a LOT before bad weather. Done all our rides, and starting to parents/relatives now. Love the look on the car after a good polish/wax and sealant. The machine is really easy to use and does not beat me to death! Light enough, but heavy enough as not to have to apply pressure on the pad. I did get the 5 inch pad and smaller for around doors, trim, and smaller places on the car. Works like a charm. So this would not go on my disgrace shelf. But I'll be glad to get the switch fixed. UDM ON!!!:rockon

After reading your swirl marks thread and this one, you are coming dangerously close to owning a rotary....the UDM is a great tool but will not match the result of a rotary...that said they require practice but for true swirl removal a rotary is the way IMO

Interesting isn't it to see the natural progression from beginner to novice to pro. While I'm still a beginner I've just made the jump to the rotary for this very reason. Like so many have said, the UDM has its place in a detailers arsenal....so must a rotary eventually.

I made that obversation only because she was not happy or as content as she wants with the UDM....its a great machine and can help greatly on the paint, but for true paint correction the rotary and heat are key and faster..IMO...I suspect that's where she is going
