A couple of questions about engine cleaning

I have few questions about engine cleaning before I start.
1. How do you clean the sound deadening material on the undserside of the hood?

2. I plan on using simple green for cleaning, should SG be diluted?

3. Which protectant would collect least amount dust and dirt under the hood, between cleaning? 303, Vinylex, AA, Tire foam, In & Out, Accent detailer or trim detailer

I may use the CD-2 kit if I can find the kit locally.

1. I use a very soft nylon bristle brush that is sold for washing vehicles. (Not boar's hair) I spray some APC on the bristles and brush very lightly. The sound deadening, fire retardant material is not at all durable so you might want to try an area to see how much it deteriorates.

2. IMO, SG should definitely be diluted. In fact I don't use it since a 50/50 mix of SG and water seemed to dull the underhood paint on one of my vehicles.
My APC of choice has been Meg's APC+ for quite some time. I don't know how good the replacement works, but the original APC+ is good stuff.
FWIW, S100 Total Cycle cleaner does a pretty good job on the areas you can't reach with a brush or rag. It sprays on and rinses off.

3. I rarely use any dressing under the hood, but 303 is what I use as a protectant on about everything. I haven't noticed it attracting a lot of dirt/dust. :dunno

CharlesW,
Thaks for the help. It's funny you mention S100 TCC, as I was talking to my brother about cleaning a motorcycle and mentioned the S100. I plan on using the S100 as it will not dull the paint, alloy metals or chrome and eats dirt, grime and grease.

Be careful about using Simple Green in your engine bay if you have an aluminum engine, it will speed up block corrosion. I would use a dedicated engine degreaser if that's the case.

On the sound deadening material I have had good results with spraying on some APC. Then I use a brush attachment for my shop vac, this removes the dirt and seems to clean as you go. If there are some realy dirty areas I use charles way and then followup with the brush attachment after.
