A black, bagged, and super-swirled Toyota truck *56K* WARNING

EBPcivicsi

GOT PREP?
This is a heavily modified 97 Toyota Tacoma truck, the paint is mostly custom, but some is factory.

The swirls were bad, real bad. Add to that the fact that the paint was so contaminated with other paint (parked outside of a custom shop all day, every day, the over spray adds) that it chewed up an entire clay bar and you have yourself a rather interesting day. When I started claying the finish it was like the clay was “stuck to the paint, it couldn’t “break loose and get through the contaminants. Any of you that have ever picked up a Meguiars over spray bar know exactly how big they are and just how much clay this truck needed(think about three of the retail bars).

Adding to my woes was the fact that different areas of the truck were painted at different times, then you had areas of factory paint. I could tell the areas immediately, but the products that I ended up using worked great on all areasthough I did have to buff a little longer on the harder (factory and older custom paint) areas.

Final process was:

Wash

Clay (whole bar)

Dry

Buff with Hi-Temp extreme cut and a meguiars cutting pad via rotary polisher @1500 RPM’s

Buff with 3Mperfect-it III machine glaze @1400 RPM’s

Buff with Menzerna final polish II via porter cable and meguiars polishing pad @ speed 5

Wipe down with Wolfgang QD to remove all dust

Apply two thin coats of Wolfgand deep gloss sealant

Apply one coat of Optimum polymer wax

Tires are dressed with poorboys bold and brite

Glass cleaned with NXT glass cleaner.

I also hand buffed the custom painted interior.

Total timeabout 9 hours.

I think this deserves a

:bow WOW! :bow

Absolutely stellar.

I've had one of those jobs where the clay "wouldn't move". I honestly contemplated wetsanding the entire vehicle, but ended up just banging through with the clay. Tough procedure, but excellent results. If you didn't charge a lot, well...

Thanks all. :D

tdekany, nope, just the exterior though I did rub the painted interior by hand--took about 30-45 minutes. Washing and claying took about 2 hours and 45 minutes--much longer than normal.

Reflections, I clayed first because I feel like it allows the polish to work more effectively as it doesn't have to cut through the "gunk." I am sure I could have clayed after compounding, but in my head that would just create more work. Not to mention that in my process I wash, leave the car wet, mix up fresh bucket of suds, clay isng said suds, then rinse. Claying with detail spray post wash just doesn't fit into my process as it stands right now.

mrecktid, I do, but they are on my computer at home--I will try and get some up this evening if time allows. It is a really cool truck, but I couldn't begin to tell you all of the mods, there *a lot* of little things that I don't even recognize. Evidently, the rear suspension was modified in order to fit the 20" wheels in that width and offset. I just don't know enough about the "mini-truck" seen to know the mods.
