Hello Autopia,
Well I started the repair of my godmother's metallic silver Doge Caravan yesterday night at around 11PM. The car is a 1995 and has just under 100K on it. I was not looking for a perfect touch-up but had my hopes high until I began layering the color coat on.
This is in a garage that is only 3 years old and the temperature was 73 degrees. I had the dehumidfier running continously so humidity wasn't a factor. It was pretty dry in the garage.
I washed the passenger side door down with dawn. I then used autoint's New Car prep to remove all wax and oils. I took a razor and chipped away the bubbling paint around the chip. The size came out to be around a half dollar. Imagine two ZFX 20 mL bottles laying side by side parallel to each other. thats about the size of the chip. There is also rust forming in the chip.
I sanded the down the chip with 400 grit sand paper. I then put on two coats of rust-primer on with 20 minutes between coats. I was done with this by 1 AM and was letting it dry. I surfed Autopia talked to a friend on the phone until 4AM.
I went down to the garage and checked on the rust-primer. The rust has turned black and it felt and seemed dry. I sanded lightly with 400 grit sand paper. I then put on 3 coats of Plasti-Kote primer with 30 minutes inbetween each coat. This was done by 5:45AM. I lightly sanded with 400 grit sand paper and wiped down the area with the new car prep solution. I then started putting on the touch-up paint. I just mixed some white and dark metallic gray and started to experiment. I come close to the shade but its just different.
The metallic silver is just a little to hard to match with this cheapo Pepboys touch-up paint. I talked to my godmother and she said as long as the rust was gone and the color came close she was happy. I tried to mix it just right but it just didn't work. So I just started to put on a coat of paint every 15 minutes from 6AM-3PM. I let the paint dry for a little bit, then washed the car at 3:10 with Z-7 be careful around the touch-up area. I degreased the engine while I was at it. Now the car is clean and dried with 37 coats of touch-up paint on the chip and 4/5 of the way of forming the bump above the paint. I am still working on it. the silver doesn't match but I don't want to strip it and start all over again. I would say a darker blotch on a door panel is better than having a junk door panel put in that is white and makes the car look like crap. Gosh I am mad for not matching up the paint correctly but I am kinda surprised because the touch-up is not as bad as some of the hideous stuff I've seen before. Some people just blob on the paint. I took the time to make sure everything was prepped before I even started laying down primer or color.
Now it is 5:15PM and I have buffed out the hood with lambswool and the Makita and a compound, followed by Menzerna IP with a foam cutting pad, and then hand applied Menzerna FP.
I will be Menzerna IP'ing the Caravan with the Makita and foam cutting pad and then following up with Menzerna FP by hand. This is to all the other parts of the car except the upper half of the passenger side door where the paint repair is going on.
I plan on applying Zaino to the car. Which leads me finally to my question.
- Can I just Z-6 the car and apply Z-2 with ZFX? will there be bonding issues?
I would dawn wash but getting out the hose, washing with dawn and drying this caravan at 1AM in the morning doesn't seem reasonable.
I want the garage door closed and people not commenting on working at weird hours of the morning. Sleep...I got little to none...A pot of coffee and I am still awake.
I am taking pictures of this so I will post them once the project has come to a close.
Thanks!
Jason
