I did start to do the mags, but it was soo caked on and corroded that there wasn't much point. Some parts were actually removing the chrome finish to get the stuff off. My friend said not to bother because hes picking up a new set soon.

I really like the shine.

Not to mention the 13B Rotary motors........ Hmmmmmm those high RPM's I cant get enough of.

Great looking car.

Nice work! Bet your friend is thrilled with how it turned out.

I too am a big fan of the 1st gen RX-7, had one in college (identical to the one in this thread) and recently bought one as a time machine of sorts.

Is that the original ss metallic paint? If so, how did it respond to correction...some ss metallics have like a "built-in clear" where the clear floats to the top (metallic particles sink lower and the main pigment sinks all the way to the bottom) and can't take much correction.

I'm asking as I never did any serious correction on my '81 and I don't want to make a big "oops!" on my ~new '84 when I finally get around to it.

I think its original paint, and seemed to respond like any other car with a clear. I think it'd be around a medium hardness clear. Almost all of the swirls gone, and tons of pop.

I'd say it wasn't too bad considering it is a 23 year old car. I have seen four year old cars much worse than that.

Great job on the swirl removal, the paint looks very deep and wet! :bigups

Jorge.

Thanks! Hope it still looks decent when he gets it back on the road (waiting for insurance at the end of the month)

LOL, whats up with the dude in the cart

edit - crap, Back in Black beat me to it

Great looking car! I always wanted a first gen RX-7. I drove a clapped-out one once, burned rubber like nobody's business!

The '84 and '85 GSL-SE models had the 13B engine, all the other first gen had the 12A.

Interesting- OK, thanks for elaborating. Sounds like I need to proceed cautiously.

That's a single stage though, *if* it's original paint as Mazda didn't switch to B/C until later. I can't quite tell if it's original paint from that pic of where the side trim is glued onto the front fenders. Nice though, whatever it is.

I don't remember when they switched to b/c, but they made a big deal out of it in their new-car brochures. Sounds like it's the type of ss metallic I described, where you have to be careful you don't cut too deep. The Mazda metallics from that era are notoriously fragile and it's very rare to find one with original paint that's in decent condition especially if parked in the sun (which is why I over-paid for my '84 GSL-SE, it's really too nice/rare to drive). My owner's manual even cautions against using "abrasive polishes". Sounds like I'd better plan to live with the deeper scratches.

Sure is nice! Other than half the year raining lol. That guy in the cart is one of my friends. We found a few shopping carts and had fun with em while I was taking pics haha.

I have 85 RX7 GSL-SE same color. All I have to say is; Excellent Job! That metallic paint is prone to oxidation. 99% of them I see are faded/oxidized.
