#83 + Cutting Pad + Speed 6 = Not enough?

A 1998 C230 I was working on had some serious swirls. I have used Poorboy's SSR 2.5 before with good (not amazing) results on swirls, so I thought #83 would be a better bet.

Well after 3 passes at speed 6 on my PC 7336 w/ a Lake country cutting pad, some swirls were still present. I went on to apply some Clearkote Vanilla Moose Wax (<-- Went on and off super easy, like it a lot) with a polishing pad, followed that by Klasse Sealant Glaze (was a bi--h to get off) w/ Finishing pad and #26 with finishing pad. After the whole process the finish isn't as good as I would like it.

I honestly don't know what else to use. Diamond Cut 2.0 (#85?)? How abrasive do I need to go to get the finish I am looking for? Am I limited by the PC, maybe have to step it up to a rotoary?

I understand the car is older and hasn't been taken care of but I felt confident that I would eliminate 98% of the swirls for good.

FYI- Speed 6 on the PC is not 6,000 RPM. 6,000 RPM is used to measure the speed on a rotary, and that speed would burn through paint like a hot knife through butter.

Wow thats a lot of swirls. I had to go to a rotary with #83 to get swirls out of my dads car. I tried the same thing you did (The pc on 6 with a cutting pad)and nothin worked but the rotary did.

You just aren't working it long enough. I can take up to 5-10 minutes on a single panel sometimes, trying to get rid of all the defects.

Hmm.

Should I strip the wax and and start over?

Im going to have to do 10 passes and use up the whole bottle of #83 (or whatever).

To remove those swirls you'll have to polish them out (which will strip your wax).

You might be hitting the limit of what a PC can remove with those swirls. I suggest you buy some 4" pads and the right size backing plate and try those. The 4" pads won't bog down as easily and I get better results at defect removal using them.

As others have said, patience is the key with a PC and swirls like that. If you're dealing with hard paint then a rotary might be needed, but I'd try the 4" pads first. Here are two places to pick them up:

Yep :xyxthumbs Only way I can remove marring with a PC is with the 4" pads. A lot cheaper (and safer) than a rotary and handy for tight spots too.

3 passes at speed 6 sounds kinda too fast to me. to me, it sounds like the SSR 2.5 is being broken down too quickly and not having enough time to polish the paint.

i like to use SSR 2.5 this way: with the PC off, spread the polish out on a 2 x 2 area. turn the PC on and further spread the polish out in the area i am working on at a low speed. at a speed of 4, i go over the area with very slow passes a few time. i then bump the speed up to 5, and continue to make slow passes until the polish pretty much disappears. this usually removes most swirls and leaves the paint ready for a LSP. sometimes i'll get light hazing, so i'll follow up with SSR 1 and a polishing pad.

so maybe try slowing the PC down a couple speeds, make slow passes, and allow the polish time to work.

btw, got any pictures of how the car looks now?

good luck. :wavey

I was using DACP and not SSR2.5. I have decided to re-do the the C230 when I get finished mine.

Just as an exepriment, on my own car (heavier swirls from previous owner), I started with DACP at speed 6 and a cutting pad. But this time, I applied more pressure on the polisher. After doing multiple passes, in the really bad areas, its come out how I want it. It seems to get the extra cutting power you must really give it to the PC (and move super slow). Now my pads are destroyed :(, but its worth it.

I did get some hazing which I am removing with SSR 2.5 and a polishing pad at speed 4 (normal pressure). After that I plan to use VM with a polishing pad and top it with P21S carnuba wax.

Extra pressure won't help them. I've noticed that after being given advice from a more experienced user. When you don't put as much pressure, you can work the product longer.

I think "super slow" were the two keywords. Did you apply enough (read quite a lot) polish?

Polish = liberally

LSP = super thinly

With sufficient amount of product, you should get a couple of minutes pure working time, without drying out, dusting etc.

If you want to remove the swirls with your PC follow this advice to the "t". :xyxthumbs
