66 Stingray Corvette Convertible, 22 Pics

This car belongs to my father in law and detailing it was his birthday present this year. This was actually my first detail after getting back into the detailing business. NSXTASY dropped in to make sure I wasn't spraying brake cleaner on the paint or anything...

This car taught me quite a few lessons about what can (permanently) happen as a result of neglected finishes. Half of the car was re sprayed about 20 years ago and that entire re spray job has a spider web type of clear coat failure that is impossible to remove, so I had to round it. The interior was so oxidized I used some silicone dressing (I know a very non-autopian thing to do) after FK1 and other water based dressings could not cut the oxidation down. After dressing with the silicone it was wiped and allowed to dry under the car cover for a week before it was subjected to the elements. The convertible plastic window was not salvageable even after an hour of polishing, maybe washing with heavily concentrated dish soap, and household window cleaners does that? :)

Process:

ONR

Heavily diluted APC for wells etc

Clay

Started with Optimum compound but experienced micro marring, so some polish was added and that worked fine. The entire car was done with the diluted compound.

1x OP

1x PS

Nattys Blue

Danase Wet Glaze

The after shots had a wash and some AW added.

Dressings were done with FK1, which was great as this car is on a dirt road and experiences major dusting. The FK1 does not attract dust.

I just randomly took shots throughout the process, and spent a very long time on this as I only had my UDM.

The befores, this paint has never been polished:

Dirty car and my clean detailing truck (otherwise known as my wife's car)

Some swirling:

Some shaded afters:

A Blurry after shot, the only close up I took. The paint was swirl free but not defect free, so you get the idea.

My favorite shot, a happy owner... He lost all his other pics of this car in a house fire so I am printing and framing a couple for him.

And now the main event, full-sun shots. I was very pleased with the Natty's / DWG combo.

What a beautiful motor.....thanks for sharing the pics :)

Just one question : is it supposed to have only one wing mirror ?

It took until the 90's even for some US cars to have a passenger rearview. You could get a honda civic without one into the mid 90's. Almost no 60's cars had the passenger's rearview.

Agreed, passenger rear view mirrors were optional on my '92 Civic hatch...great car. The engine had 270K on it when I sold it and still ran very strong!

Very nice work by the way. Paint looks much better!

Sweet Corvette. It needs some nice 18"s and some lower profile tires because thats just to much sidewall.

Thanks for the good words. Might be too much sidewall for some, but I prefer the original look. That car is worth 60k plus, 18's could really drop the value.

Great detail! Where did you take those pictures? (I'm from Ada!)

There is a small park that people often launch kayaks from off of pettis just past Honeycreek. The entrance is dirt so go slow. And the light is really best in the morning on that side of the river.

There is a great spot for water shots but the kayakers had parked there that day. If you ever want to do a shoot let me know and we can meet up, those pics were point and shoot but I have a tripod and DSLR that i have access to.

They are not a permanent modification. :hifive:

C2's are still the best looking Corvettes ever made.

Really nice improvement, the paint looks spectacular in the sun!
