'64 Red Corvette Convertible... Paint Correction!

Can someone explain to me the difference between the PC 7424 & PC 7336?

Only difference I see is how they are marketed. One as a sander, the other as a polisher. Is that correct?

So, the PC 7336 at lowes for only $109.00 with the accessory kit from CMA would be a good way to go

Thanks

Nick

I love my PC for SMR, FI II and AIO. I've also waxed with it and that worked very well and very fast too. Another little bonus is that the PC can also be used as a sander. In fact when I bought my PC from one of my tool suppliers I bought the sander which came with a backing plate and about 4 different grits of sandpaper. I'm refinishing a door in our house so I used the PC on it last night and it worked great. It's only a quick wrench change away to convert it back to a polisher. So it is really two tools in one. :up

The two machines pictured above are nearly the same thing except for the backing plate. I found that the sander had better availability from my local PC distributer. Be sure if you buy the sander to get the 7336 because it is the sander designed for a 6" plate and it has the correct counter-balance weight.

In fact since you really should buy the CMA kit with the velcro backing plate anyway, you might prefer to order the PC sander then you will be able to use the tool for sanding or polishing simply by changeing the backing plate.

The 7424 has a 5" plate and corresponding counterweight. The 7336 has a 6" plate and corresponding counterweight. Otherwise, they are identical machines.

I got the 7336SP (comes with a PC polishing pad) as a gift and am ordering the accessory kit from CMA. Seems to me that since the CMA accessory kit is 6" the 7336 is indeed a good way to go because you will already have the proper counterweight to use with the kit.

Right, that is what I was thinking.

Not too mention it is only $109.00 here locally at Lowes. That is even cheaper then the $115 I saw it for on the net and no shipping.

thanks to both of you

The 7336SP is the way to go. I just picked mine up today from Lowes for (you're not going to beleive it) $96.80 including tax! How? Well, Walmart.com has one for $98. I'm not sure which model. Lowes, bless their hearts, will price match minus 10%! Now I just need the CMA pads and I'm good to go. Good Luck.

I see the one at Walmart.com

I believe that would be the 7335 model. Surprised that Lowes would price match to the 7336sp. Congrats!

Here is the info on the 3 machines direct from the porter cable website. It looks like the 7336 and the 7424 are the same with the difference being 7424 is marketed as a polisher and comes with polishing accessories and the 7336 comes with sanding accessories. 7335 has a 5" plate ( and weights ) and the other 2 have 6" plates ( and weights )

Hope this helps to answer any questions about the pc machines ( I have the 7424 )

I bought the 7424 from Coastal and it came with a counterweight for 5" pads and a white foam 5" pad. No backing plate.

I also bought the CMA pad kit that has the velcro backing plate and the various pads. Problem is that the CMA kit includes 6" pads. Meguiars also sells yellow pads attached to a backing plate that are ideal for a PC. But they too are 6" pads.

I have been using my PC with the 5" counterweight with the 6" pads. But the thing vibrates like a mo-fo at setting 4 and above. I have the correct 6" counterweight on order at Coastal and will install ASAP.

There is lots of talk about the PC's so I suggest doing a search on the topic.

Thanks especially to BigCat.

I took your advice. Went to the Walmart.com website and printed out the page for the PC they have for $98.97 and took it to Lowes to see if they would match the price.

Well wouldn't you know it. I got a smart guy who saw that it said it was a 5" sander, not 6". Soooooooooooooo, a little creativity was in order.

I came back home. Saved the webpage to my puter. Opened it up in my HTML Editor and changed teh 5" to 6", added 7336SP to the description for good measure and drove back to Lowes.

So, I am now the proud owner of a new PC7336sp for which I paid a total of $94.86

Now, I need the accessory kit from CMA and I need to decide which product line I am going to use.

Nick

You're welcome. Now as an officer of the court, I cannot condone the creative use of HTML editors. I guess I was lucky in my case. Even though the Lowes salesman and I couldn't figure out the model number from the Walmart webpage, he was still happy to match the price.

I decided on the Blackfire line. My car is platinum (silver) and there may other products better suited for that color (for example I've heard Pinnacle glaze is excellent). On the other hand, as obsessed as I am about my car, I also recognize that I won't have time to polish/wax as much as I should, so I went with a "polymer" system. By all accounts, BF is great stuff.

Good luck!

does anyone have a part # and web address for the weights for the 6" ? mine does the vibe over 4 also, its worth a try to smooth it out a bit. Even though it says it is for 6" pads.

I stand corrected ! THe 7424 NEEDS the 6" coiunterweights even though it specifys a 6" pad. Read the info below and it explains a little more.

THANKS FOR THE HEADS UP INFO !

Thanks ! I found it, here is a little more info about the counter wieghts.

The counterweight is a half-moon shaped piece of metal attached to the shaft of the tool. This smooths out the random orbit action by providing a counter balance to the elliptical orbit of the rotating backing pad. If you change the pad size you must also change the counterweight or suffer unnecessary vibration and possible damage to the tool.

There are two different counter-weights which are clearly marked to indicate use with either the 5" or 6" backing pad. Therefore if you decide to outfit the 7335 5" Sander with a 6" backing pad for sanding or polishing you must switch to the counterweight for 6" backing pads. The same goes for the 7336 6" Sander. If you decide to outfit it for 5" sanding or polishing you must switch to the counterweight for 5" backing pads.

The only exception is when using the 54745 6" Foam Polishing Pad. Due to its light weight and the small-diameter backing pad used (included with pad), it can be used with either the 5" pad or 6" pad counterweight. Porter-Cable outfits the 7424 6" Polisher with the 5" pad counterweight.

[/b]</blockquote> You could have been real creative and edited the $98.97 to $48.97 (Only kidding, of course :D :D :D )

BTW, for anyone who is interested in using the PC for sanding, Coastal sells the dust collector hood / hose kit (Part # 73333) for $19.50.

I got the PC from Coastal w/1 extra white pad. Then I ordered a few Ulitimate Bonnets from Meguirers. This way I plan to use one white pad for AIO application, SG by hand, and put a bonnet on the clean (extra) white pad to buff off both AIO and SG. Later on I'll probably get either the CMA kit or a H&L backup plate from PC and the buff pads from Meguirers for other work (swirls, cleaning) down the road when needed.

This customer had been wiping his paint with an OLD SHOP RAG!!! :out::out::out:

He was literally sanding the paint. When he showed me that old rag, I almost stroked!!!!!:toetap05: "Throw that thing in the trash!!!" I gave him 4 nice microfibers and made him promise to use them... I also showed him the proper method of QD'ing his car.

He said... "I been doin' it all wrong." I said... "Uh huh."

Process:

ONR Wash
Zaino Claybar with Z6 lube
M105 one-step using a Griot's/LC Orange/Speed 5/KBM
Z6 wipedown
Blackfire WD via Griot's/LC black/Speed 2 (x2)
Z8 Wipedown
Done.....

ENJOY!
