63 Corvette?

Tomorrow my partner and I are doing a 63 vette. Anything I need to know special about this car. Is it fiberglass. Owner says it's been resprayed in areas which leads me to believe we may be dealing with some SS paint. Anything you can think of at all? We would really appreciate it.

The convertible top on that car is Double Texture Vinyl. Got it from the chart at properautocare.

As far as the body material, Im pretty sure that it is an all steel body. I dont think they introduced fiberglass on those vettes till the 80's??? I cant remember now, some googling should answer your question pretty quickly.

Is there any site that anyone can think of off the top of there head where I could confirm whether it is steel or fiberglass?

Am I correct in thinking that fiberglass is a little bit of a different animal then steel?

ALL Corvettes are glass. If you don’t believe tom5781 and me just go join a Corvette forum and ask. You’ll get flamed so fast it’ll make your head spin.



If you plan on rotary buffing be aware that glass doesn’t dissipate heat as quickly as metal and the paint is more likely to burn if you aren’t careful with speed, pressure and pad choice.

Wow !!! Those car are really untouchable with regards to price these days. Good Luck on that beauty !!! I have a customer with matching 1967 (coupe & convertible) in marboro red with black striping. I simply cannot get my eye off those cars when I am doing work on his collection. Thay are absolutely stunning. Too bad they are hardly ever driven.



Good Luck, and be careful buffing, especially near the upper edges on the fenders.
 
Here yougo man, just did a quick search came up with this little die cast corvette. make sure you read this description.

I've never done a Corvette, but I would have to think that you would want to treat it with the same care as plastic bumpers on any modern car.
 
Thats interesting Grimm, you think you have to be that careful huh??? I wonder if anyone on here has detailed a car like this and can tell us their procedures.



Call up Sal Zaino man, he is the Corvette man, he will surely be able to tell you everything you need to know to take care of this car!

Take my advice with a grain of salt since I have no experience, but I know paint acts a lot differently on fiberglass. I've seen lots of Corvettes with cracking, etc. So whether or not it will be as delicate as plastic, I don't know, but I would at least go at it with caution. Especially knowing it's single stage paint as well.



My dad has a '70 with what appears to be SS paint, so hopefully I'll get some experience with it sometime this summer since it needs to be polished pretty badly.
 
What an awesome car to work on, I have never buffed a mid year Vette but would probably do it for close to free just to do it. Do you have pictures of the bubbles?
 
Well folks we got it all done. I know everyone said take it easy on the fiberglass but turns out it wasn't original paint owner was wrong. Was a repaint. My partner and I could barely touch it . Diamond Cut and a wool compounding pad at between 1500 to 2100 did almost nothing. We went up and down the abrasive scale, nothing did it. We did as best as we could though and will post a C&B sometime this weekend. Thanks for all the help folks.
