I went to harbor freight today and saw a 5" backing plate and decided to get it. My current rotary has a 10" head and I always found it unwieldy and it also soaks up lots of polish.
Well this 5" one just makes it so user friendly I think I'll be doing all my polishing rotary now. Well I did my motorcycle gas tank and have to say the results are spectacular. On top of it being more manueverable, it also reduces holograms because I'm able to control it while placing the full pad face on the paint. With the 10" I can only use about 1/4 of the face and to reduce holograms hav to make a couple passes using the top (horizontal holograms) then pass using one of the sides (vertical holograms). The full rotational polishing action seems to produces as fine a finish as my trusty random orbital and it being rotary I only have to apply minimal force. This thing I have to say cuts my polishing time by in half and is more foolproof than using the 10"!
