3rd Gen Griot's 6" DA Issue out of the box?

With the stock 6'' backing plate and the Chemical guys 5" plate there seems to be an odd movement. If you were to set a DA flat on a surface..you would expect it to rotate/move in any direction on that plane. However mine seems to also "wobble" or move front to back. Meaning front...toward the surface of the car and back...toward me.

I can replicate the odd movement or wobble with the motor off, by simply rotating the backing plate by hand. I was told by Griot's customer support that this was an optical illusion.

Am I supposed to feel the pad trying to bounce or fight me? Am I feeling an optical illusion? Am I going crazy?

Does any of this make sense? If you have ever used a pneumatic da sander on paint you know what im talking about. it is 2 dimensional movement. it feels flat, movement is purely on one plane...

Please give me your input!!! Is this normal? Am I not used to this type of machine?

I think what may be going on here is your seeing the imperfection of the backing plate. The BPs aren't 100% perfectly made - so there is some imperfection when you free spin the machine, it may look like something isn't right. However, unless it's really severe - it doesn't really matter much during operation.

Now, once the pad is on paint it shouldn't "hop". I'm not sure if this is something your eyes are perceiving or something you feel. Keep in mind there is also a crush washer between the BP threads and the spindle mechanism - make sure it's there.

Maybe make a video of this and we can tell you if its ok.

Broceratops -

The machine you purchased is a Random Orbital Machine, and it will never be smooth like a Rotary Machine is..

It will vibrate and oscillate at the same time..

It will be somewhat smoother when it has a backing plate and a foam pad underneath it, and some product and moisture on a panel...

With the machine off, spin the pad by hand and if it rotates smoothly, then it should be good to go..

If you watch a Video of someone using it you should be able to see all of this going on..

I believe on this forum Todd Helme once wrote an amazing article on how a Random Orbital works including how it moves back and forth and spins at the same time..

If you feel that your machine is not doing something correct, Griot, or whoever you bought the machine from would be happy to exchange it, Im sure..

Good luck !!!

Thank you all for your input! I have tried the OEM Griots backing plate, the Chemical Guys 5" and Im thinking about giving the Detailers Domain ventilated backing plate a shot. Has anyone used that one? Or the Chemical Guys Torq?

I'm still not sure what you are describing as the action that is happening.

But I would highly suggest going with a Lake Country backing plate, rather than taking chances with others.

especially if you already use lc pads. I use the lc backing plates on my griot's 6" and 3" da with no problems.
