3M Spot Sanding Pen

I found this pen at the local Pep Boys the other day. It is basically a nifty tool for sanding small nicks prior to touch up painting. It is made of a plastic tube with a collection of glass fibers clustered in the center. There is a screw mechanism that will allow you to lengthen, and therefore widen the diameter of the tip, or draw the fibers in for storage. It comes with a replacement fiber insert in the handle.

I found it to be very easy to use, control, and manage. It sure beats spending time gluing sandpaper to erasers. The cost was $5.99, but I suspect that it will last a very long time. I was able to clean and polish right up to the edge of the paint chip, and it left the metal underneath clean and shiny, and ready for primer.

The back of the packaging says the glass fibers are finer than human hair. Other than that, there is no indication.

I was thinking about it and I used to use the same thing in Slotcar racing to clean the comm on armatures. The only difference was I just used the fiber stick, it did not have a holder. The fibers are indeed very fine, and I know first hand how they can hurt if you get one embedded in your hand. If you pick up one of these handy tools, do not touch the fibers by hand. They will splinter, and are difficult to see and dig out. The packaging says as much also. Other than that, I really find this usefull. Not to mention I can get the refils at the slotcar shop for .89 each!

I tried doing a search at 3M's website for the pen - I couldnt find it from the info visable from the picture you posted. If you post the UPC code from the packaging (if you still have it) - on can do a UPC search and get more detailed info on it.

I couldn't find it on their web site either. You might call 1-888-3M HELPS and reference the part number in the picture. Otherwise, I will get the UPC number tonight.
