3M Rubbing Compound Fine Cut???

Hello,

I purchased some 3M Rubbing Compound Fine Cut awhile back when I wasn't near to being serious on car detailing :( .........but now it's a different story ;).

I think I bought it for removing some horrible waterspots on my old 87' Acura Legend, but i didn't work and haven't touched it since. Now that I have some available time on hand to do some claybaring and more I want to give it a chance :p .

What is it for and how do I use it?

Thanks in advance :).

miata_roadster- Unless you're dealing with some pretty serious scratches, you might not need to be using anything that aggressive. Also note that you might (probably) have to follow up with a milder abrasive.

For *ME* it would be good to have around, but not something I'd use very often.

In my experience, 3M PIII Fine Cut RC really isn't all that agressive when used with a Porter Cable . . . it's typically what I reach for when working on moderate-to-serious swirls (if PIII Machine Glaze won't do the job, FCRC is usually next on my list of things to try). I've found FCRC to be only slightly more agressive than Finesse-It II, but much easier to use, and it still finishes very nicely (good gloss, no apparent haze). I've done black cars using FCRC and and gone straight to sealant, although you must work it completely to avoid the followup with something milder.

Again, this is my experience when using a PC; I'd imagine FCRC is much more agressive with a rotary. With the milder "oomph" of the PC, though, I find FCRC to be just about right for heavier swirls.

I dawned, and clayed my miata down last night and woke up 6:30 this morning to go right after it :)!

Applied on the 3M FCRC on the one annoying spot with the swirls on it and did it about 3 times but not much of an effect. Did the entire car with it and was dissappointed by the fact that it may have added a few new marks on my finish :(. Maybe this stuff is tooooooo strong for my blood, but I'll keep it handy next time when I have a rotary to use :).

I'm now off to getting on 3 coats of Pinnacle LS topped off with Mother's Carnubua Wax................which I dearly swear on :)! Should do it for today with some grease on the tires and I'll be good for tommorow when school starts. Need to have the babes reflected off my ride :)! It's always for the babes, for me as I know :).

Question:

What good digi cam is out there for the low $200 range? I saw a 3.1 megapixel for somewhere south of the border of $200 in todays ads.

Thanks in advance.

miata_roadster- Sorry, can't help with a digi-cam recommendation. WHICH 3M FCRC do you have? They make more than one...

TortoiseAWD- Like you, I find the PI-III (05933 in quarts), and also the PI-II (39002 in pints), FCRC to be plenty mild (seems you and I are fans of the same 3M products). I THOUGHT/ASSUMED miata-roadster was talking about something else :nixweiss

miata_roadster: Yes, in my experience, 3M FCRC will create some fine scratches. So I follow it with 3M SMR. As you've probably read, when starting with scratch/swirl removal, you work "up" the ladder -- start with the gentlest product, and work up til you find the right pad/product combo that'll do the trick. Then you often need to work back "down" the scale.
