3M PI-III MG or Meguiar's #82

I'm running low on 3M PI-III MG, and I'm trying to decide what to buy next. My local Carquest still has a supply of 3M PI-III MG, but when I asked for a friend's opinion he stated that 3M PI-III MG was too abrasive to use more than once and that I should go with Meguiar's #82.

I've had good success with 3M PI-III MG and never considered it as being particularly abrasive, although it has been very effective removing minor marring. I have been using it twice a year when I renew my LSP even if marring is not a problem as it seems to help produce a sharp, clear appearance.

What would you use in this situation?

I have the PIII RC and the PIII MG and I personally would never think the MG is too abrasive. In fact, I dont even think the RC is that abrasive. This is truly one of the overlooked products that kick butt IMHO *without* being overly abrasive.

Yeah, what sQuashed said. Stock up while you can still get it. If you're really worried about the abrasiveness, there are still products I'd choose before #82, but it's just personal preference. I'd consider something like FP (only used the orginal) or the discontinued 1sz Pro MP if you can still find it.

Is 3M PI-III MG significantly more abrasive than #82? Before the recommendation to use #82, I thought 3M PI-III MG was fairly mild, but always got the job done.

I really like #82, gives a really nice deep yet clear finish. However, I haven't tried the 3M so am not really in a position to comment.

I love 3M PI-III MG. its my go to polish. I dont know why your friend said thats its to abrasive? He must be confused with another 3M PI-III product.

The MG probably *is* a little more abrasive than #82, but unless you have really soft paint I wouldn't worry about it. You can break down MG without applying much pressure/heat/etc. and it'll behave like a really mild product. Or you can apply more pressure, or use a rotary, and make it act more aggressive. Nice and versatile.

I don't think it's abrasive at all really except for light swirls and marring . It contains aluminum oxide meaning it is abrasive , but only 3%-5% , so VERY minimal abrasion .

It also contains clay so more of a finishing cream with some slight abrasive qualities . I use it after Pi-III fine cut to remove any swirls or marring introduced by the compound .

It also seems to work good alone with a green pad as a light swirl remover .

this is with a rotary

The 1Z Pro is milder. More like Menzerna FPII. The three step PI-III RC/PI-III MG/1Z Pro MP is still my favorite approach on cars I really care about like my S8.
