I wasn't planning on ever using a glaze 'cause I went the Zaino-route , but after the recent crunch and therefor repaint-job on the whole right side of my car I had to.

I know that after a repaint you cannot touch the paint with waxes, but as winter is approaching I had to do something to give that part some protection.

After searching the forum a lot and reading David's book , I came up with the solution:

3M Perfect-IT III Finishing Glaze is made for that purpose : it's a bodyshop-safe Glaze for new painted bodyparts.

The instructions are on the bottle, very fine print, so wear glasses (not for eye-protection , but to be able to read...):

take a soft cloth , dampen it, put small amount on cloth and rub in with pressure.Let dry for about 1 minute.Buff to a high gloss.

A soft cloth?

No, I made a home-brew applicator: take a kitchen-sponge and an MF you've cut in 4.One fourth part fits nicely over the sponge and the green harsh part of the sponge makes the MF stick to it.

I moistened the sponge first, then with a spritz-botlle I dampened the MF.

Small amount?

Well, as expected the first time you use something you're affraid to use too little, thus using to much

:shocked

I'm a Z-user so, going thin is my middle name : the other panels were better. When using to much it's a pain in the butt to remove, but you learn fast to go thin.

Did I say you MUST go thin?

Buffing:

3M suggests using one of their cloths, but started with 100% cotton towels: works, but not easy and takes alot of buffing to get rid of streaking.

Switched to MF's : much better, but as the Glaze is silicones still streaks at first, but with a second fresh MF they are soon history.

The looks:

A glaze should fill-in swirls and provide great shine :

3MPIIIFG realy fills in the swirls , the swirls and nothing more then the swirls!

Judged by the looks the glazed part is a bit shinier then the Z'd part, and my best bet is that the silicones do that.It looks "wetter".

Protection:

my ecxpectations aren't that high, I've read that glazes can be gone after a couple of days , or, after a first wash...

I'll have to wait and see

I'll let you know

One thing I did notice is the same amount of beading as the Z-part, I'll judge the protection on the beading. Before the glaze was on , it was more sheeting on the repainted parts.

That's about all I had to tell about it,

Sorry for the long post.

Note to David:

If you put this glaze in the review section ,I'll be glad to do a review and a protection update there.

UPDATE:

14 days and 2 washes later, the Glaze is still there and "protecting"

as for slickness : close to the Z-side

beading :honestly : the beads (water droplets) are tinier than the Z-side:nixweiss Must keep a close watch on that one

I've been looking for a good glaze to use on customers cars. I think I might have to try this stuff.

When the paint is cured can you do a test for us?

Apply the 3m Finishing Glaze and buff with a cotton towel. Even if the streaking is their apply a coat of carnauba wax, let haze and buff off and tell us if the streaks are gone or not. Most stuff the streaking will go away w/ a wax topper but I'd like to have someone test b4 I go out and get a few gallons of it :)

I did the test You ordered:

temp:53°Fahrenheid

Humidity:45%

Time of day:11h30CET (=GMT+1)

I washed car with Z7 as allways

applied 3M Perfect-it III finishing glaze with damp app., let dry 1minute,

buff off with cotton.

Streaks were there

put on Meguiars Gold class paste wax (don't know if it's carnauba or not)

let dry for 1 hour (as usual when I use it on my bike)

buff off with cotton towel and final buff with MF (as usual when used on my bike)

streaks no more:bounce :bounce

I found the application of the MGCPW easier with the 3M underneath than without it.Coincidence or logic?

BTW, even after the 3th wash the glaze still seems to be there...

cvcaelen, Thanks for doing the test.

Now, the next test I need you to do... j/k :D Sorry for taking so long to respond but I guess I missed your response :(

I'm going to have to go out now and find some of the glaze to try. I've been looking for a nice glaze that adds a lot to the paint. Think you found it!

Glad you liked the test

Feel free to ask

The last time I reported that the glaze was still there after 3 washes.I know that technicaly spoken this isn't possible as glazes have no durability.Maybe the fresh paint was responsible for the beading.I don't know.

Is there a test other than visual to check if a glaze is still there?

According to 3M, this product is designed to provide a 'durable', silicone-free finish. It contains very mild abrasives, polyamides, as well as carnauba wax. Kind of sounds like Meguiar's speed glaze.... a body-shop safe cleaner wax.

I think if you sealed the glaze in with a wax, then it would be able to last some time more.

Intermezzo's response also listed what the glaze contains.

Thanks for clearing that out Guys:xyxthumbs

As mentioned in threats before : 3M & Meguiars don't allways name things the way they should be named.

So dude, compared to IHG, how does it compare? I currently use IHG and it works quite well but swirl hiding isn't that impressive (with one coat at least)...

easier in application , specialy if you put on, wipe off, wax , let cure , buff(what a sentence...).

better durability

can't say about swirl hiding better or worse

I'm bringing up this thread cause I've been testing this P/N 09377 PI-III Finishing Glaze.

I had to clean my car after a few days of vacations in a hard watter area that killed my paint.

This is what I did:

DACP with PC and Megs yellow polishing pad

3M PI-III Final Polish w/ PC & Megs yellow pad

Car looked great.

Then I followed with the Finishing Glaze, which I believe is some kind of sealant wax, it contains body shop safe silicons and IMO no abrasives. I applied it either by hand or PC, easy both ways. Buffed it with MF, and it left a very sharp and even surface, I liked it very much.

On the hood I put a coat of EX and it increased mostly the slickness.

I'm loving this product so far!

I have always been a huge fan of this product as well as finesse. When using a rotory it is second to none. Follow with a good wax and thats about the best shine you can ever get.

Stuart

The instructions on the bottle say to use it either by hand or DA, to layer a thin coat.

About your signature, guess you can stop dreaming
