300,000 Mile Volvo! Importance of Prep

Well this would mark the first Click & Brag post I've made and unfortunately the pics and time of day could have been a bit better. Hope you all enjoy!

Background: As part of my Father's Day gift to my Dad, I thought it'd be nice to do a full detail on his 1994 Volvo 850 with a little over 300,000 miles...

The car was hand-polished and waxed for about 9 years of its life and then neglected for about 3 years meaning there were enough swirls to make any detailer cringe. Weather here in Chicago hasn't been all that decent until two days ago and I started a little late which made taking pics a bit hard (time pressured)

Process & Products: I didn't have time to do before and after pics (sorry, I would have LOVED to see the overhaul) but a majority of the car received IP and FPII along with OC and PG on some areas needing more attention (Hood and Trunk). Clearkote Metal Polish, 303, Meg's #10 and 17, P21S Wheel Gel, Mother's FX (Thought it'd be nice to try out) Tire Shine were some of the smaller products used. Woolite Cocktail (thanks Scottwax and drk) was used for carpets, Zymol (the only stuff I had until Z-10 came) Conditioner was used on the leather. In case you're wondering, I'm also replacing the brackets and putting new license plate frames up. Unfortunately I have to still fix the front bracket since the dealer had screwed them into the plastic and it's stripped forcing me to keep the old rusted bracket and no frame (screws are different sizes and rusted on so the frame won't fit....that's another project)

This would also be the first time using a sealant on the entire car (not just wheels) and thought I'd give the Werkstatt Twins a shot.

The Importance of Prep:

Daylight was almost gone and I had just finished the prep work for Prime and AJ and thought "Ah what the hell, least they can see how prep alone does 80% of the work" so I began taking a few shots.

--All these pics do not include Tire & Wheel treatment or Plastic and Metal Polishing; Car was just washed, clayed, polished for about 4 hours... *It was challenging...*--

Second Time Ever Doing an Engine Cleaning (learning) & Getting a little better; this engine needs about two more cleanings before 12 years worth of junk is removed...

The only shots for that day of the JW Twins being on the car and even drove her to the BP to see if I can get any better shots.

Personally, these are all pretty bad and really bad lighting but it's the most I could do...

The day after I was in awe on the gloss that JW had achieved. Although I'm still a big carnauba fan, I'll be sure to use sealants quite a bit.

It was nice to give my dad a new car again! (Little bit of pride)

Thanks everyone for the months of helping me out become an Autopian!

Below is a pic from a few months ago which (ok I lied a little :)) got a very small detail by hand (didn't know anything about detailing other than using my old Zymol *TW* Cleaner Wax) and I took a picture of the paint before (still looked horrible afterwards); not too great of a photo but you get the idea:

Beautiful job! That car looks outstanding.

Your Dad must have freaked. I worked for Volvo at their NJ headquarters years ago and I remember seeing and hearing about many extremely high mileage cars. I'd bet that Volvo HQ knows about your Dad's car via the dealer if he still goes there for service. You should send them these pics!

Thanks EMazda for that!! He does still service it at Volvo for everything and I think I'll have to send these pictures to them since I think they'd appreciate seeing what their cars are able to accomplish.

Looks really good! He's missing a turbo though! Good looking car for over 300k. As long as you maintain them, they last forever.

Great job on the Volvo...this isn't Autopian related, but has he had to do any major service on the vehicle? New engine, transmission, etc?

Thanks everyone for the comments! Regarding the maintenance, there has been no major service done YET (knock on wood for my dad's sake) to it and still running well. Tranny's got a very neat "whirl" sound to it as it accelerates from 0-20. Besides that, everything from light bulbs to seals to spark plugs are changed regularly via Volvo.

Scott, thanks first off and regarding the pics outdoors, trust me, I'd love to get a few. It's rained the past two days and I saw the car today earlier (and smart of me not to bring a camera) and it was spotless! Not even an ounce of dirt anywhere and I was told the AJ beaded beautifully. I'll try if it stops raining (raining currently and has been for most of the day :() to get some shots of it.
