22PLE Detail and Review

Last weekend I took the opportunity to knock out 2 of my cars. I posted the Jeep with EXO v2 and this one is my Wife’s MDX with 22Ple. I am rushing to get all my vehicles coated so I can have a horse race of sorts to determine what coatings perform best, and look best over time given similar conditions and maintenance. This is something I planned on doing for a while but never got around to it.

The Product

The Dual Sided Applicator

This is a product I did not know much about. When I was in the process of looking for EXO v2 I waited for it to be in stock at Autopia but my search led me to Detailed Image. After a few emails asking about the EXO v2 vs something better he asked if I ever tried 22PLE. I said no but I was interested in learning more. After some conversation about the 2 coatings I decided to buy the 50ml bottle of EXO v2 as I know I loved it in the past. He said if I was going to be doing another car in the next few weeks he would include a sample of the 22PLE with my order.

Here is the detail I used it on.

This MDX is my wife’s daily driver. It is the grocery getter, kid transport and all around utility vehicle. Yes, she likes a clean car, but my wife could care less if I ever cleaned the outside as long as the inside it clean. She is just as happy to run it through the swirl-a-matic car wash. But I don’t agree.

Products and Process

Wheels cleaned with P21S gel
Various wheel woolies, brushes and wash pads
Tires scrubbed with TAW and a stiff brush
Car was washed with reset 2BM x 4 grit guards
Decontaminated with IronX
Clayed with fine yellow clay and ONR as lube
Car was polished with a Rupes 15, yellow pad and Yellow Rupes Polish
Hood was 2nd stepped with an Uber polishing pad and PO85 to see if it made a difference. It did not so I stopped.
Wiped the whole car down with IPA 15%
Applied 2 coats of 22PLE with the applicator that was included
Tires were coated with Geyon Tire
Trim was treated with Geyon Trim

Before:
Dirty wheels and Tires

Oops………looks like thats it for the before pics-It was my second wash of the day, after coating the Jeep so I guess I zoned out on the Photography. I will try to make it up to you on the rest of the write up.

After the car was pulled in, polished and wiped down this was the results

After 2 coats of 22PLE

22PLE is very easy to work with because it goes on thicker, and is easier to see than the other coatings I have worked with. I always have trouble seeing coatings on white. It also flashes slower which makes my life easier. I have FOLAHS syndrome. (Fear of leaving a high spot) Because I hate to have to pull out the polisher the next day and fix it. Yes, it’s happened to me before. If I catch them early enough I can usually re-apply some product and wipe them out. If they sit overnight, it’s a light polish. In removing the 22PLE the first thing you will notice it that is removed more like a wax, than a coating. It does not wipe clean with the first swipe of the MF towel. It does not require much effort to remove but you need 2 MF towels at all times. At about the ½ way mark it seemed the towels I was buffing off with were loaded and I was just leaving trails on the panels I wiped. This was quickly fixed by switching to 2 new towels and all was good for the 2nd half of the car.

The 22PLE has great initial gloss, and the included applicator makes applying easy. I like this applicator better than the suede over a block, and about as well as the Gtech applicator. If it were bigger, like the size of a traditional block I would like it better. I have big hands and find it easier to hold a larger applicator.

The 22PLE has a strong smell and I need to open the garage to apply. It has a strong smell compared to other products. This product touts a 24 month lifespan, quick and easy soil release, amazing gloss and easy application. I would agree with all of the above except for the soil release part I have not tried yet.

The post application gloss is excellent and was noticeably increased after curing overnight.

I used the 30ml size and used about 85-90% of the product to complete 2 coats on all the painted surfaces.

Thanks to DI for allowing me to try and review this coating.

Geyon trim was used on the cowl to bring back the lost gloss due to UV damage.

Thanks Ronny.

I have mine still to coat? What should I try next?

I listened to you about putting the 22PLE on my wife's so what says You?

I'd like it to be something new, that I have not used, otherwise, I would just use the balance of the EXO v2 I have left in the 50ml bottle from the Jeep.

Beautiful work !!!

I just did Stephen's with BF, went on real nice, looks really good.

Don't know about durability, but if you're going to do it once a year..........................

I could send you a bottle.

Sounds like a great product if the 2 year staying power is true. Even if 1 year, that's fine. I'm all about long term sealants these days.

Can you apply wax or other products over this? Does a QD adhere and enhance well over it? How about plastic molding? Does it stain or can it be used there too?

Thanks, looking to try something new to market but thanks very much :)

As good as a coating can be, for an enthusiast, on his own car, does it not take away some of the fun of using different waxes and sealants and appreciating the differences?

Anything north of 1 year is great. I have success getting about 18 months out of GTECH EXO v2 and Opticoat 2.0. After that, there is still protection, but not much beading.

You can wax over these, but I am not sure why you would want to. The self cleaning of these coatings is what I love about them. Quick, fast washes, where most of the junk hoses off. Waxes get all kinds of stuck on mess and I am done with wax and traditional sealants. Too much prep applying an LSP, I would rather do it less often so coatings are where I am for now.

There are QD for each product out there and I tried the GTECH one. it was good but un-necessary. Brough back beading for a week or so then it was gone. I would just re coat at that point.

No way! I love a clean car. Cannot say I love cleaning it, polishing it, deconing it (Iron X works but stinks) claying it. and coating it. But I love driving a clean car enough to clean it.

Can afford to have someone else do what I want done, as often as I want it done. (Talking about my cars guys)

I find it gratifying getting a beaten down finish back to its former glory. But in the end, I just like to have the cleanest, shiniest car where ever I go. Glad I don't live near most of you guys.

When I become a rich man, I will hire someone better than me, or train someone to keep my rides in the manner they are accustomed to-LOL

I really like 22ple trim and metal coatings. I haven't tried the paint coating, but have been wanting too. The 22ple trim coating has been on my car for around 3 years now and it's still looking good. The metal coating I'm not so sure about. I put it on my exhaust tips around the same time as the trim coating and I believe I have polished it off. FWIW, I recently cleaned and coated my rear rotor hats and coated them with 22ple metal coating and they are super glossy.

Looking good! I have had VX Pro on the majority of my personal car for 2.5 years and it is still looking great. While the beading has diminished, it still sheds water and dirt easily (have done comparisons by sealing a small section, and the 2.5 year old 22ple still stays noticeably cleaner).

I've recently spent some time talking with the creator of 22ple, and have an even better respect for their products after speaking with him. The time and development they put into their products is refreshing to hear... especially when it seems so many companies just crank out new products every other month :)

I've got a bottle of each of their new products to try - 22ple VX3 Signature and VX Pro 2 - both of which are said to be a step above their first generation coatings. Looking forward to testing them out.

FWIW, I have found their VS1 Final Coat to posses equally impressive self cleaning properties, and it beads very well... so topping with it is a good way to maintain the hydrophobic properties and add even more protection.

In my opinion, yes it does :(. I remember almost every weekend looking forward to trying another wax or sealant combination on my old car or motorcycle to find something I really liked. I could see my car/motorcycle in the driveway from the couch in my living room so after detailing, I would glance over to my car/bike and inspect the results from the "wax of the week". Some waxes really stood out and it was always fun comparing the gloss from the same perspective every week.

Having said that....I still think applying a coating to my vehicle was the best decision I could've made :)
