2014-15 Mazda 6 Paint Thickness??

I read a few posts stating that Mazda paint in general is very thin. Was wondering if anyone out there has detailed a 2014 or 2015 Mazda 6 and taken thickness readings and if there has been any improvement in these newer models???

Readings under a 100 microns are a common place with the newer vehicles. Paint is getting thinner; especially from Japanese manufactures.

A word of warning, just because vehicles x readings is say 98 does not mean vehicle y's is the same, cars get body work done all the time old and new. Trust me, get a basic meter that reads both ferrous and non ferrous.

I wouldn't necessarily consider the paint thickness thin but it is definitely soft. Most new cars have 3-4 mils of paint thickness.

It's not as soft as Honda or Subaru paint is it?? So is the 3-4 mils what you've seen on Mazdas as well as other makes??

Good friend of mine owns a body shop, says pretty much every car they get in now, no matter who makes it, has between 3-4 mils of paint thickness.

This is so true. I was working on a paint correction on a Nissan this week and decided to take several paint measurements before I began just to be sure everything looked ok and was consistent. Its a good thing I did. Although there were several areas that were about 4mil ( 100 microns), I ran up on a couple of spots that were in the 2.7 - 2.8 (70 microns) range. It appears there had been some previous body work at some point. I had to tread extremely lightly in these "thin" spots. Without a PTG I could have gotten myself in some major trouble. I cannot imagine not having a PTG if you are doing paint correction on other peoples vehicles especially when you can't always confirm the history of the paint.
