2012 Sonata, 2-step correction and 22ple VX1 Pro Glass Coating

Rasky's Auto Detailing
This car belongs to a good friend of mine and I actually talked her into going with 22ple. Since I see her often I figured it was a car I'd be able to monitor closely and observe how it holds up over time. She's had this car for about 6 months now and I've been meaning to get it in for a new car prep ever since. Unfortunately my schedule has pushed it out until just recently. With my wife out of town on business for a week I opted to do this one during the week after I was done at my full time job...she normally doesn't like me working during the week. ;)

I actually did more of a "hybrid polish" on this one as the car had gone through the snap n' scratch (soft cloth) wash at the dealer prior to her buying it. LMAO I love how car wash owners say their soft mops don't scratch the paint....maybe not, but when they slap against your dirty wheels and tires, then go over your paint, they CAN and WILL scratch the paint! This was very evident by the amount of marring on the lower panels. As you progressed upwards to the horizontal panels they swirls were less and less sever. Because of this I was able to 1-step most the upper panels with just Sonax Perfect Finish. While that process still yielded excellent results on the lower panels too, some deeper marring remained which I wanted to remove. For those areas I went with D300/MF for the initial correction and followed it with Sonax Perfect Finish.

Put her to work! This stuff was so easy to use a monkey could apply it! ;)

Nice Hybrid Chad. How is 22ppl different then Optimum's coating? I haven't heard very much about it, but if you're using it, it must be good.

Thanks guys!

It's more of a glass coating like C1 or CQuartz. It's much easier to apply and adds a lot more to the paint in terms of looks and feel. However, I have no long term data to show how long it will last or how resistant it is to chemical and other elements. They are saying up to 2 years, but we'll just have to wait until someone posts up some data like your Fusion thread. ;)

I do have a couple test pans sitting out with Opti-Guard, 22ple, and CQuartz Finest on them.

Nice bud. How do you like the 22pl?

I love the look, feel, and especially the ease of application. CQuartz Finest may have a slight edge on the look and feel though, with a similar use of use.

Nice work, Chad! Paint looks awesome! Pictures with the 7000 look amazing! I still can get mine right?

Thanks Max! I'm still not happy with my pics though. I always feel like they are not as sharp as others I've seen with the same model camera and I feel like they are almost out of focus a little....

Excellent work Chad! The car looks very nice.

As far as your camera, is that the D7000? What lens do you use?

I've started feeling the same about my 60D, the pics aren't as sharp now as they used to be. I'm thinking maybe it's like a car, go get the body and lenses professionally cleaned and calibrated every 3,000 shots....

I see 40 old quality glass (lens) taking pin sharp pictures with new cameras. If your camera doesn't self clean, it is good to have the sensor cleaned once in a while I guess, but I am not sure how that would effect sharpness - as far as I know, you control sharpness with aperture (F stop) Do you guys shoot manual, A, or auto mode?

Aperture usually corresponds to depth-of-field (DOF), which yeah, can affect sharpness to a point but if something is out of calibration with the AF metering system in the camera body, or something is 'off' with the AF motor in the lens it can also have an effect on sharpness. I usually shoot Av (aperture priority mode on Canon cameras). Lately I find it easier to get sharp pics if I manually focus where I used to be able to rely on the AF to do the job 9 times out of 10.

If that IS the case, or course!

What I am saying is that if you are not getting the sharpness (in Chads case), play with the aperture - each lens has its "magic" Fstop where it is the sharpest at.

Yep D7000. I'm just using the kit 18-105mm for most my shots. I also have a 35mm Nikkor prime and a 70-300mm Tarmon, though I don't use those for cars much.

I wondered about that but it's only a few months old and has never been where I'd like it to be....maybe I just suck at pics! :(

I'm either shooting in aperture priority or on manual. This camera has a LOT more features than my old XSi and I still have no idea what a lot of them do....it could just be a setting for all I know. If I'm not using a tripod I'm usually shooting at an f stop of 11 or 9 and even lower if I want an artsy effect like the Mini pic below. I try and switch it up though and some of those pics above may have been as high as f22, but I'd have to check the meta data. I'm on auto focus most the time when shooting the whole car for final pics but I will use manual if it looks out of focus, usually on hood shots with sun bursts.

I also feel rushed a lot of the time when I take pics and maybe I just need to slow down and think about them more. I just picked up a lighting book last night in hopes of learning more and improving my pics.
