I still need some clarification about layering of products. Should the car be washed or rinsed in between coats? Will a QD do the job? The cars get dusty even after one day! Also, on one of my vehicles I do an AIO followed by a P21S topper, how long between carnuba coats? The other gets AIO followed by SG, how long between these coats? thank you.

There is a fine line when determining when to just QD or wash. If the dust is very light, then you might be able to just QD. If it's on the moderate to heavy side, then wash. My theory is, when in doubt wash it.

I would wait at least 3 or 4 days, maybe even sometimes a week between each layer of caranuba to give the previous layer a chance to cure.

The only time you can layer without washing is when you apply multiple layers without moving the car from a protected space. With Klasse SG which cures in an hour, or Zaino with ZFX, or Blackfire (don't know how fast it cures) this can be done. Proper washing won't harm the previous layer.

yah, after just a few days of washing and Zing, the dust simply collects. the whole concept of QD is still foreign to me. you mean to just spray w/ Z6 and wipe the dust off? wouldn't the dust/dirt scratch the paint?

also, Z6 is concentrated so they say to use it sparingly. how am i suppose 2 use it sparingly w/ a towel unless i move it around to spread it out? and by moving Z6 around, i'd simply be draggin the dirt around on the paint... seems like swirls and scratching can result... i guess i still dont get it .... :nixweiss

The reason it works without scratching (if you do it right and use the proper towels etc. ) is because it has LUBRICITY. It's similar to washing your car; you wipe a mitt with car soap over a wet , dirty surface and rinse the dirt away. If you don't keep the car wet or have enough lubrication from the soap, you risk scratching during a wash just the same. A "quick detailer" just can't provide adequete lubricity for a LOT of dirt, just dust and minor surface dirt. It takes some time to understand when you can get away with quick detailing, and when you need to wash. As far as "use sparingly" well, the Z6 is that way because it's ostensibly meant to be used on a CLEAN surface before Z2 or Z5, and not generally as a QD. It can, but you need to use MORE to add lubricity for a slightly dirty surface then. I would't abide to the " sparingly" thing when using it this way. Better to err on the side of greater lubricity and spray on heavier when using it as a QD. Pricey to do with Z6.

A QD should be sprayed in the air over the car ( in a protected/ non windy enviornment this works best ) and allowed to land on the paint. You then wipe it as you would do with Pledge on furniture, albiet in one direction preferably, turning the towel over in the process until the surface is buffed dry. Can you scratch? Sure, but that's true ANYTIME you touch the paint with anything, if you aren't watching what you use and how you use it. Go for it, you'll get the feel for it fast, and you'll be fine.

Sure hope this helps some.

Carguy, don't confuse cure time with dry time. Klasse SG dries in 20-60 minutes, but takes 6+ hours to cure as does Zaino. Zaino mixed with ZFX takes 10-20 minutes to dry & cure. BF takes 1 minute to dry and 1-5 minutes to cure.

guitarman, thanx for that explaination. makes alot more sense now.

so instead of Z6 for QD. what other products are there?

I have seen at walmart meguire's quick detailing for around $6. would that be sufficient?

what about Mothers showtime, can i use that as a QD? i have alot of that left over from the claybar kit.

Sc5speed...

The problem is, with Zaino, you can't use a quick detailer with any trace amounts of wax or silicones in it, or you'll have bonding issues with the polymer. The jury is still out on this perhaps, but myself and a few others continue to experiment ( successfully) with Meguiar's Final Inspection as a QD with Zaino. I know Sal insists on the exclusive use of Z6, and honestly, if you can afford to use it on an almost daily basis, more power to ya, but I cannot. I only use the Z6 just before and after a layer of Z2-Z5, and at car shows. The Final Inspection has no wax or silicones, and I haven't had any issues using it, for the last 14 months or so. I buy it by the gallon.

The regular "Mist N Wipe" QD from Meguiars dosen't meet the same requirements as the Final Inspection, I believe it has some silicones in it. Stay away from that, as well as any that contain wax as well.

You may want to do a search on this topic, and see what others are using too, with Zaino, besides Z6. Cheers.

As QD-method,isn't it more prefered to use the bucket-water-MF-then-dry-with-MF-then -mist-QD-on-MF-method rather than just QD-mist-MF?

What I mean is with the water & damp MF you take away dust and heavy dust, your main concern is to keep a clean site of the MF on the surface(rincing often!)and than on a clean surface you mist QD.

Z-6 realy says on the bottle:gloss enhancer.

That's what I do:the water takes the dirt , the QD does the maintenance.

Guitarman,

I wondered why one shouldn't use wax related stuff(car-soap,QD,...)on Z , thanks to You I now know: it's a bonding problem.I guess one should dawn-wash if mistakenaly "wax"was used.

If I'm wrong , please correct me.

o thanks, i didn't realize most QD is like that.

so i guess mothers showtime's no good for QD?

i might go pick up a bottle of final inspection then

because i just didnt feel like Z6 was a QD... more like gloss enhancer stated on the bottle...

<strong class='bbc'>I330I the 6 hrs you mention, where did you happen to find this number?

LC [/b]</blockquote>
Likecars, I guess I could have been a bit more clear on this. For Klasse, the consensus seems to be 12-24 hours per coat. For Zaino, it is the same, unless it is over 70 degress. Then it's 6-8 hours. I guess that's why I put 6+ hours. Just wanted to point out the difference between curing and drying. :)

You are correct, a mild Dawn wash would mitigate any bonding issues from wax or silicones left on the paint. Cheers.

After seeing some of my work on the forums, this owner contacted me to take care of his new A5 S-Line. Having very low miles on it and a careful owner, the car was in decent condition, but still needed some improvement. Correction was done with Menz SIP on LC orange on the PCXP. LSP was 2 coats of Zaino Z5pro followed by Z8 Grand Finale.

This was a fun car to work on, and good looking too!

Thanks for checking it out!

Jeff,

Wow what a beautiful job on an equally beautiful Audi !!!

I had forgotten about all my Z5/Z2/ClearSeal/Z6/8/ZFX Zaino sealants, I might have to use them again - The Z5 is stunning on that paint !

Thanks for sharing another example of your awesome mad skills !!!

Dan F

Jeff,
That was an outstanding job on that Audi. Truly an amazing job with only a one step correction.
Also, the depth of gloss on the paint was gorgeous. It looks dripping wet.:drool5:
