I see some of you guys are getting as many

as 3 coats with an once of Z [half zfx bottle] or more.

I found yesterday that a dime size dab[spread out with finger]

on the damp[ w/z6] applicator only gets me about a quarter hood.

So I accomplished 1 coat per 1 once. I thought I was applying

very thin.

Whats your trick?

Also my rep told me to leave the Z on for one hour then buff

but I could of sworn I've read other posts here that say they

apply and buff right away.

What's the average Zaino users wait time for Z removal?

This is a different world from carnuba.

I can only get about 2 coats from half a ZFX bottle and this is fairly thin on a 4 door Nissan truck. If you are using ZFX and the temp is above say 45deg it should dry in about 30 minutes from my experence.I start at one end of the truck and by the time I get through applying to the whole thing its time to remove.Good luck and take care

use a damp applicator. (NOTE: ALWAYS USE A DRY ONE WITH Z1).

I soak my cotton applicator and then wring the @#$% out of it, I spray a few squirts of Z6 on it to help attain thinner coats.

As for application, I put a few strips on the applicator and then rub it together to coat the pad. I don't like using dime size drops, I use small little drops to do a 12"x12" section of so, and then add another 1-2 small drops. I find this works better than using a dime sized drop and trying to do a whole panel. Don't be afraid to apply it thicker than most. If you get 3 coats out of 2 ounces you are doing damn good!

Hope this helps.

I found working with SG prepared me well.

I put small dots on the applicator vice one big one to try and spread around. Had a little Z6 on it as well. Was able to get 3 coats per 1 ounce with no problem.

Wanted to try this:
http://www.autopia-carport.com/forum/showthread.php3?s=&threadid=4434

system, but couldn't find those apps. Have them now, will give it a shot this weekend.

My first coat was dry in 10 minutes, 2nd waited for 20 and 3rd for 30 minutes.

My trick is applying the Z with a PC and gray CMA finishing pad. I can get 2 full coats with 1 ounce. It takes 20 minutes to do the whole car, and with ZFX, it's then dry and ready to come off at the point where I started.

Some of the folks here are better with their hands than me, because I was never able to get it this thin by hand. Must be old age.

<strong class='bbc'>8ball, can you throw up how you do it.

Love the PC for AIO, but didn't like it for SG. Might give it a shot for Z. [/b]</blockquote>
Sure. First, I dampen the pad with a spritz of Z6, which seems to help get things spreading evenly at the beginning until the pad gets more saturated with the Z5 or Z2.

For each panel, I squeeze out a circle of Z onto the pad. Ususally about half of the pad diameter for half the hood, for example. Smaller amounts for smaller panels or areas that I'm working, and smaller amounts as I go along and the pad gets more saturated.

Before I turn the PC on, I will lightly "blot" with the pad on various areas of the panel so that there is some Z sitting on the surface of the panel in more than one spot. Then, with the surface of the pad on the panel where I want to start, I turn it on (no need for speed higher than around 3) and work front to back and back to front in slightly overlapping strokes, keeping a fluid, constant motion. Turn the PC off before you lift it from the surface, while it's still moving.

At first, I had a tendency to want to go over and over the same area, but I quickly realized this was a waste, and maybe even counter-productive, since all I'm doing is applying product, not cleaning or removing swirls. One pass with the PC is really all it takes. I will go back over an area if it seems that the Z is a little thick in that spot, and it evens out nicely.

After I've use the PC to cover all the areas I can, I pull the pad off the backing plate and use it by hand to cover all the spots I couldn't get to with the machine (there are actually very few on my car, and there is virtually no unpainted plastic trim for me to worry about). I don't even have to put any more Z on the pad to do those parts by hand, as the residual still on the pad is sufficient to cover what is left. Plus, it gets the most out of the Z and leaves less on the pad, for easier clean up.

Using this technique, I consistently get two full coats on my Acura with one ounce of Z. I use less and it comes off easier than I ever experienced with applying by hand.

One last thing, I am well aware of Zaino's recommendations regarding application, i.e. front to back on horizontal panels and up and down on vertical panels, which I always did by hand. All I can say is, since I started using the PC, my black car has never looked better. My back feels better too.

Product Removal :

What is everyone removing Z with

a Fieldcrest/Cannon or an MF?

Drying and Z6 application :

I did my first Z7 wash yesterday and found

that the water droplets dry quicker on a Z car

than a carnuba car. Also, with a Fieldcrest

I was getting the microstreaks. So instead of

using a terry for the Z6 topping I used a MF with

great success. No microsteaks. I am going to try

my OG Watersprite for water removal and MF for rest.

What are Zainists using for Drying and Z6 application?

and then blot the rest of the car dry with MF towels....less rubbing the better. For Z6'ing I use plush charisma cotton towels. MF absorbs and wastes too much product in my opinion................

Z removal : Wamsutta terry.

Z6 same.

Drying car, my drops just bead there do not seem to dry any faster, I love my large neatitems MF towels. Lay it on and sucks up whats left after rinsing with a hose (nozzle off).

6 coats from 1oz (half of the mixing bottle) of Z2 w/ ZFX 3 on 540 and 3 on Z06

Also did 3 on a 97 Sedan DeVille and 3 on a SLK 230. Still had enough left over to do a quick coat on the Z06 from 1oz.

Also did 3 on my brothers X5 and 2 more on the Z06 from 1oz.

I just spray the CA from Zaino with some Z6 and put a line of Z2 w/ ZFX down the middle of the CA and then spread it out with my finger.

If you can't at least get 3 coats from 1oz, I think that you are using it too thick. It will take longer to dry if you use too much. 40F in my garage the first time I used it and I did the entire car waited 20 mins and it was dry with no problems at all. It might of been dry sooner than that.

gmblack3, that's incredible. Good job. :up I hope you are not missing too many spots though. How long does it take you to do all 6 coats? Can you see a very light haze (looking from an angle) or does Z just sort of disappear as you apply it?

BTW, I get 3 coats from 1oz. (on a E420).

I also got 3 coats from 1oz of ZFX/Z5 and I thought I was going too thin. The coat seemed to disappear on some spots but I assumed it was there since I went over that spot a few times with my pad. This was on our 2001 Accord sedan.

Drying/removal/Z6 all with Cotton Bath towel.

I hate to remove the spray nozzle from the hose. I use a one gallon bottle instead. Works better as I can control the flow volume at will.

For some nozzle it is hard to make a good seal and have to break it and redo it.

What you are you guys getting all these extra coats

with, the ZFX bottle or a syringe?

Its seems that you waste a lot of product on the walls

of the ZFX bottle over a long period of time. Z2 and Z5

are like tapioca or vanila pudding. LOL

A syringe seams they way to go but some say it doesn't

mix well because of air pressure.

What's the consensus?

Also, I'm getting high from Z6. No kidding. There is some

pungent chemical in it. One Z6 application = one screwdriver

That means I had 3 drinks Tuesday. LOL

Had a hangover Wednesday.

I can't see how gmblack can possibly get 6 coats from one ounce of polish. And using ZFX it is very difficult to even get out all the polish mixed in the ZFX bottle. A small amount goes to waste matter how hard I try to get it all out. The syringe idea sounds good...I may try it in the coming month(s).

I know of someone with a cloth top vette (not much surface area too cover) and he is able to get 39 coats out of an 8 oz Z polish bottle...but 48 coats???...and some of those vehicles described are pretty big.

3 coats from one ounce sounds about right.

rd_volvo,

I've used a 35 mL syringe a couple of times (30 mL is almost exactly one ouce) . . . I tried an entire ounce the first time, and had problems getting the ZFX and Z5 to mix. The small amount of air space left in the syringe didn't provide any room for the solution to agitate, and made fitting the plunger to the barrel and holding it in place during mixing difficult because of the back-pressure.

The second time, I mixed only 1/2 ounce, and I found it much easier going. Since over 1/2 of the syringe was still filled with air, there was much more room for the mix to slosh around and really blend. Holding the plunger against the back-pressure during mixing was easier as well (since air compresses much more easily than fluid). After the solution was completely mixed, I inverted the syringe for a minute to allow the mix to settle away from the tip, then popped the cap, and evacuated the air from the top. Voila, ready to give the car a polymer injection :D

Although the syringe was a pain to prepare, I found it a great tool during application. I was easily able to get 1 coat out of 1/2 ounce on my WRX applying with a PC foam pad (yeah, yeah, Zaino heresy, I know); I used about 1 mL per panel (yep, you can measure it that accurately). Gentle pressure on the plunger yields a thin line of product that you can "scrub" around your applicator pad to get even coverage. Best of all: no waste. My first time with ZFX, I used a bottle, and really had to shake to get the last three or four panels' worth out of the bottle (there was probably a couple of mL still clinging to the sides). No such troubles with the syringe; every last bit of Z that I mixed made it to my applicator.

Good to the last drop. :xyxthumbs
