2005 Lotus Elise

Its been a while since I have posted any details Click and Brags, and lately I have gotten a hold a couple of NICE cars. This customer occasionally visits autopia and linked up to me by chance. Its a 2005 Lotus Elise with about 4k on the clock. I mean it was in great condition as its in the garage a majority of the time. It did have your basic washing swirls and some random marring that seemed odd to me. Anyways what I thought was gonna be a very easy job turned to be a major PITA! I mean clear coat on this car is VERY strange. What seemed to be very minor swirls were very hard to tackle and the paint seems be unusually thin, it had VERY LITTLE OP. Some areas the owner pointed out were what appears to actually be paint defects and surprisingly I found a few fish eyes in the paint and I know it hasnt been repainted. I tired FOREVER to figure out the best polish/pad combo to tackle these slight swirls. Started with FPII with White LC pad via rotary at 1000rpms...nothing. Moved to IP with Orange LC pad via rotary at 1000 rpms...nothing except some added pad marring. Stray clear coat marring still there. Some spot I busted out the Menzerna Powergloss and orange pad via rotary still nothing except a lot of micromarring. I tired the above combo's except the PG all with the PC and nothing. Finally after bein frustrated as heck, I decided to try IP with white lc pad via rotary at 1300 rpms and worked it a little longer and it left no micro marring and got "most" of the clear coat marring and swirls out. Here is the process for the rest of the car.

Wash Z7

Clay Z clay and wash as lube.

All the above combos of polishing -- ended up doing the whole car with IP w/ white polish pad via rotary at 1300 rpms.

Zaino ZPC via PC and polish pad at 5

Z6 wipedown

2 coats of ZFXed Z2PRO per owners request.

Wheels and tires cleaned with 4:1 Meg Wheel Brightner

Tires dressed with Zaino dressing.

INterior got vacuum, woolite wipedown

Dash and vinyl got 303 Aerospace protect and leater conditioned with Zaino leather conditioner.

The owner was very pleasant gentleman about everything and one of the nicest guys I have detailed a car for. I apologized about not being able to get the paint to 100% but he understood that I tried everything possible. He even said that he is very dissappointed with the facotry paint job being its a handmade $40-50k car. I gave the owner a discount from the original price qouted but still gave me a tip. Like I said first class gentleman.

Enough talk, on to the pics!

All in all the whole detail took me 6 hours. The curves, vents, getting in out of the car was very time consuming!!!! Sorry but before pics were not worth it since most of the swirls I was trying to tackle wouldnt show on camera very well and the car was pretty clean to begin with. Didnt get any interior shots as well.... DOH!

Truzoom...yes the celica GTS engine is in it I believe outputting 190 crank hp instead and I think the same 6 speed tranny as well. The car weighs in about 1900 pounds. Its and TRUE track rat and actually runs the quarter in low to mid 13's (correct me if im wrong)

I did get to pick the car up and bring it back to my house....Of course it was fun even considering I granny drove the car for the 6 mile drive.

Ive only been using Z5Pro on my red so far..Im going to have to throw a couple coats of Z2pro on...wow! Great job! As said above, the red is dripping wet...very nice detail!

Thanks all....the worst part of the detail other than the weird clear coat was getting in and out of it. Its almost like getting in a Nascar vehicle through the window. With the t-top off it would be ten times easier!

Excellent...that is basically the same process I use except I do one coat of Z5pro and use Z8 for wipedowns. You do great work!

Thanks, I havent got Z5 PRO yet and I forgot to mention that I did a final wipedown with Z8. I guess I need to get the new Z5PRO now!!! Everyone seems to rave about it!

I finally got to see one of those in person a few weeks back. Same color as that one and it really is a stunning car to see in person even after seeing it in magazines for the last year+. Very nice work too. Is there much cabin room in it?

The camera I just got it about a month ago. Its a Canon Powershot SD630 6.0MP with 3 in lcd. Very compact and user friendly. It goes for 350 at best buy or circuitcity. I have most of the settings on Auto and resized the images from 1600x1200 to 800x600 using the demo version of XAT Optimizer I did sharpen the images through the same program to give it more clarity. very simple program you can download for free to resize images. Scottwax refered me to it.

Phwoar, that red looks fantastic! I think you did a great job on that car. The paint look so rich and watery especially with all those body lines.

The paint looks absolutely incredible!

Did you happen to get any after shots of what you couldn't get out? Just curious because it looks just amazing to me, even in the sun pics.
