2005 Jetta TDI, 20k miles, first time ever detailed

This car has only been washed 3 or 4 times in the 20k the owner has driven it, it's just turned a year old. It's never been waxed or detailed in any way. It came back to life quite nicely, luckily it's still pretty young! It's a good friend's car and I did it for free for her. What do you guys think?

One pass with Klasse AIO on speed 6

Two passes with Klasse SG on speed 3

And of course our two tdi's blinding any passers by on the sidewalk ;)

Looks great to me! It almost sounds like since she hasn't washed it, it actually did more good than harm! Also, since she doesn't wash it much, if you could put a few layers of SG on it for her, it would increase the durability dramatically. Even if you just do a coat with each maintenance wash for the next few weeks, that would be cool.

Thanks for kind words guys! Unfortunately she lives in Chicago, and I am in Cleveland, so putting down extra layers of SG is not an option..but at least I did get the chance to add a second layer before I left.

As far as the paint condition - she had washed it just a few times, but by hand or touchless drive through wash. Apparently the dealer or she ran the car through one of the evil 'touch' car washes early in her ownership, however the damage was minimal. There were no swirls present (which is why I was able to start with AIO), but a couple hard to see scratches on the roof from the drive-thru wash that I wasn't inclined to get out. I tried some griot's machine polish 3, then 2 - neither of which are very strong IMO, and they did nothing. I didn't have anything stronger, nor did I want to cut into her clear coat too much on a new car to get them out as they are really hard to see unless you're at the right angle. Other than that some tree sap gave me a bit of a hassle but eventually cleaned up.

CJ - I think she's pretty hot, yes...and quite smart, with two degrees from Northwestern. So far she's glad I talked her into the TDI a year ago - she's loving it. We really cleaned up the interior as well but I failed to get any shots due to time constraints..

Funny guy JMV ;) It was nice seeing her this past weekend. Now I'm back in Cleveland and she's on a business trip to China...busy busy! Thx. I wish I had some interior shots because the leather looked so nice after having it's first drink of conditioner! It soaked it up like a sponge.

Looks DAMN good! She must be sweet seeing how much attention you've paid. TDis rock! I wish we could buy them in MA. (Are both the Jettas TDi-powered??)

I see you're really getting the hang of things with the new Griot's polisher. How do you like it overall?

Tom - thanks! Yes both are TDI's. Is there a point to any other Jetta?!? ;)

I like the Griot's polisher so far - no complaints, although I've only done 4-5 vehicles with it so far - the two TDI's, 06 S430, 04 Cummins powered Ram, and the 06 S65 AMG.. I'm not sure how it will react to a car without some sort of unique coolness...it might puke and break out of boredom...so the jury is still out ;)

Now you have to convince her to chip it.................... more power better milage. Those things are awsome. A chip and a new final drive and you can get 60 mpg on the highway! Ive got an Audi with the 18T and wish it was the TDI. Same with my truck 05 tacoma that I wish had the 2.5 diesel out of the hilux! She sounds like a great girl! keep her car clean, house windows and the refrigerator clean and your all set!

CJ I've sung the praises of chips etc to her since day 1...she has said she'll drive it till 30-40k and then think about chipping, as she's still loving the torque of the tdi compared to her previous POS saturn. 60mpg - wow, that's a lot more than I've heard of any PD TDI getting, but I guess anything is possible...if you drive 45mph in high gear ;) Most chipping actually ends up reducing mpg - regardless of manufacturer claims. More power typically equates to less mpg, even if they claim it's more efficient if you drive at the same rate. The silver tdi you see behind it in the picture (mine) has stage 2 rocketchip tuning and larger injectors, and has paid approximately a 4-6mpg penalty...but who cares...it dynos ove 130hp...and still averages 43-45mpg... gotta love diesels. My Cummins is making 500+hp/950tq at the wheels and averages 18 city 21hwy.. :cooleek: We'll see how it does after the twin turbos go on this summer and I dump even more fuel in it.

She is a great girl - however it's hard to keep her car, house, and refrig clean in Chicago all the way over here in Cleveland ;)

Maybe its 50 im thinking of? Its the long final drive thats makes the difference. Thats what I hear from TDI people anyway.... twin turbos..... are you going with smaller ones for faster spool up or bigger to try and run 50 psi or something?

Ya 50 is a lot more reasonable of a goal - the older ALH engine tdi's could reach 50mpg with no issues, provided they had a manual trans... the newer PD injection tdi's do slightly less.

As far as the cummins - my larger than stock single turbo already hits 45psi with no issue..when I get twins I'll be around 60psi. It's not about total psi though, it's about volume and air density. The smaller of the twins will spool just as quickly as the stock turbo does(stock there is only one turbo fyi), and once they are both spooled up, the amount of air volume and cooling is insane... The whole goal with modifying diesels is throwing more fuel into the engine, which creates more heat. Larger turbos or twin turbos increase the cooling which in turn allows more fuel and more power...it gets kinda crazy! Last weekend I did a full billet high perf transmission swap and a new fuel pump system...once you add power to one area, you always have to supplement with proper upgrades or trouble ensues :)

If only detailing that huge black truck was as easy as getting more hp, I'd be a happy camper! Parking outside and frequent mudbaths while driving offroad to ATV rallies etc keep the paint quite a challenge to maintain!

how big is your front mount now? I hear you on the big black truck thing. My neighbor just got a black GMC dullie deisel with the 6 spd allison. So I have been helping him with that.

The stock intercooler on my truck is metal, good to about 60psi...the 04.5-05 trucks had a plastic one that was kinda weak, and I believe for 06 they may have gone back to the metal one... The intercooler isn't a big issue in these trucks.

My guess is your next mod might be a bigger intercooler. cooling 60 psi on a stock intercooler meant to run 30 seems like a possible weak link(thats alot of heat). Any pics of the truck?

As I mentioned, the intercooler in my truck is not a weak spot or a big deal - not sure about the duramaxes and powerstrokes...there are more than a handful of guys running twins in my application with zero issues, and the expensive aftermarket intercoolers only really net you about a hundred degrees of cooling. Remember the cummins 5.9 is used in a variety of school buses, dump trucks, and motorhomes that weigh 5-10x the dodge ram, it's barely working in the ram application. It's actually classified as a medium duty engine, whereas the stroke and max are both light duty engines. My egt's are already cool with the larger than stock turbo I'm running currently - with twins it will be a non issue...

I won't post any pics here until I get it properly cleaned up and de-swirled, but you can see some at the link below. I am sad to say that this past winter when my truck was so covered with salt and it was 0F I did the unthinkable - went to the coin-op car wash and used the evil foaming brush in a moment of weakness... I have hours of polishing ahead of me to undo that huge mistake... You can see in the pic of the edge of the hood and antenna the nasty swirls... the doors and rear quarter are looking good, as I spent a ton of time on each. The truck is parked outside year round, and worked hard towing, offroading to camp sites and atv rallies, etc...75k miles in 2 years or so...and being black, perfect paint is a bit harder...but one of these days I'm going to fully tackle it and post some pics...its just SO much paint!

The truck looks great! "its a truck" you can get away with alittle.......... Your a couple hrs away from perfection. It almost looks like you have white jeans on in one pic, glad you dont......... I'll keep an eye out for the afters.
